Today’s Nintendo Wii Launch Rumor: October 2nd
You know a company has succeeded in creating buzz for their product when people are going crazy just trying to figure out the launch date. Such is the case with Nintendo’s Wii, and the latest piece of launch-related speculation comes to us from the folks at GamingTarget. Nintendo, in a somewhat humorous press release of upcoming DS games, taunted “perhaps the secret to the launch information for Wii is somehow encoded in the text of this news item”
GamingTarget analyzes this as follows:
The fourth quarter begins on October 1. Now look at the list. At least one game is released every Monday in the fourth quarter except for the following dates: October 2, November 20 and November 27. November 27 is after Black Friday, so it’s out. November 20 is after the launch of the PS3, so that’s out too. That leaves us with October 2.

Before we go any further, let’s take a look at what the press release from Nintendo actually said:
The fourth quarter of 2006 will herald a new era for Nintendo with the launch of its remarkable new Wii home video game system. But that’s not what this news item is about! How could that be, you ask? Perhaps the secret to the launch information for Wii is somehow encoded in the text of this news item. You might want to pore over it for a few hours before staying up all night to debate phraseology and comma placement with your friends online. Or maybe it’s all just a scam to get you to read the other games we have launching this fall. One of the two.
So frankly, it sounds like someone at Nintendo was amused by all the Wii speculation and just thought they’d write a funny headline for their press release. Personally, I can’t imagine working at Nintendo and watching as the entire internet goes nuts over which of the 90 days in the 4th quarter the Wii is released (especially given that we’re going to find out everything we want to know in a little over a month). And really, after reading the paragraph above you can’t help but think that someone’s just taunting us for fun. So my analysis?: Learn to take a joke, folks - somebody at Nintendo’s press corp has just had a laugh on us.
