Playstation 3 Won’t Scale 720p To 1080i

Playstation 3 It looks like gamers with HDTV sets that don’t support 720p natively may have to deal with lower resolution gaming on the Playstation 3, rather than getting scaled content. IGN is reporting that unless a game specifically supports 1080i as an output mode, 720p content will not be scaled to that resolution, and will instead be sent as a 480p signal. Titles affected include Resistance: Fall of Man, NHL 2K7, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 and Need for Speed: Carbon. It is unclear whether this is a restriction in the firmware of the console or a limitation of Sony’s hardware, but Microsoft’s Xbox 360 handles this with an internal scaler. At any rate, if this issue is not fixed, a number of consumers with older HDTV sets won’t be able to get the full benefits of the Playstation 3.
