Gears of War Documentary Online
For those gamers that missed the show on Friday, or will manage to miss one of the five thousand re-airings of the documentary, Gears of War: The Race to E3, MTV has the show available for streaming online, along with some bonus footage not shown on the air, including some more in-depth footage with Cliff Bleszinksi and Tim Sweeney, and some insights into motion capture and art direction. In some ways, the additional footage is more worthwhile than the documentary aired, but there is some playtest footage where gamers can get glimpses of Gears of War in action.
More after the jump…
The show itself managed to not be much more than the content in the previews, and overall there probably isn’t a whole lot new that gamers who watched the E3 trailers and footage didn’t see. Viewers do get a little insight into the goings on at Epic, but on the whole, the structure of the game studio doesn’t seem any different than other high level game studios. There are two main “conflicts” that get the focus in the documentary: first, is the time constraint in getting a playable demo available for E3, but second is the push and pull between Microsoft and Epic Games over the chainsaw weapon in the game.
While the second conflict may have been played up a little to add more drama to the game, the most irritating statement came from Peter Moore, Microsoft’s head of Interactive Entertainment, where he believes that the chainsaw weapon that Epic was trying to demo was too “over the top.” This statement then was parroted down the org chart to the producers dealing with Epic. Also interesting was that not less than four people with the word “producer” in the title were interacting with Epic. It was never really clear what the value-add in having so many people on the production side was, especially when the focus seemed to be totally on either kissing up to Epic in showing them how strong the marketing will be or pushing them to get rid of the chainsaw stuff. Really, the battle almost comes off as the “cool” Epic versus the “anti-cool” Microsoft. The viewer does get some pay-off over the “conflict” at the end of the documentary, when there’s a reversal of Microsoft’s opinions.
