  • Any idea yet when iTunes 7 will be available for download? The Apple site still has 6 as the most recent version. I want to try the new one now! OK, so I’m impatient, but it does sound like a good upgrade.

  • I wouldn’t expect it until after the keynote 😉

  • Andru ... there is no new 60GB version.  It’s the 30GB that’s $249.  Doesn’t seem to be much reason for the 30GB ... unless physical size is an issue.

  • Whoops! Thanks Rob - made the change.

  • Well, I installed iTunes 7, and I wish I never had. Not only did I have to wait for the massive download (about 35 MB I believe), but this was also definitely the longest iTunes has ever taken to install for me. Then, after installing, for some reason it has to copy over 186 songs to the iPod I had connected to the computer via firewire, even though it already had all my music on it. After it was done with that, it went through my entire music library so it can do that gapless playback. Finally, it was done, so I start up some music. Guess what I hear? Static. Sure, I hear the music, but I also get a big earful of static. My creative soundblaster drivers are up-to-date, and my music and movies sound fine in every other program. Thanks, Steve, but you can keep your iTunes 7. Release a new version when it’s done. Now I’m off to uninstall iTunes, reinstall it, and pray that it works this time (although I won’t get my hopes up). The fact that iTunes seems a little less slow than usual is the least of my concerns. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. If you’re wondering, I’m running Windows XP SP2 with Media Center 2004, 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 w/ HT, 2 GB ram, 250 GB 7200rpm HDD. I have never had a problem with iTunes before this installation.

  • Well, I uninstalled Quicktime and iTunes, but it changed nothing. I checked everywhere, did everything. Then… I increased the volume on the little bar next to the pause/play and skip buttons at the top left of iTunes (note that I had never changed this). All of a sudden, with the volume at max., it worked perfectly as always. Of course, if I lower the volume even a little, I get the static, so I just won’t do that. Strangely, this volume bar isn’t in sync with the system volume. It must only be the iTunes output volume. I do find it odd that I should have to adjust it so drastically after so many iTunes updates in the past, but at least it works now. Oh, and Steve, carry on with the good software - we’ll call this a “Windows” bug, OK buddy? I just hope that Apple can figure out a way to make the update packages smaller in the future. 35 MB is crazy.

  • OK, I don’t care how many problems I’ve had up to this point with iTunes 7. It was all worth it because of one fantastic (and fun) feature - the third view button, the one closest to the search bar, lets you flip through your music by album cover. It is simply wonderful. I’m going to have a lot of fun playing with this. The only thing I don’t like, though, is how if I have a few songs in an album done by multiple artists (instead of the main artist that did the rest of the album), it groups each individual artist(s) in that album separately, even though all the songs are part of the same album. I would really like it if they were grouped together, since they are on the same CD and have the same cover art.

  • As it turns out, I wasn’t the only one having huge problems with iTunes 7 - the problem is actually pretty widespread.
