Good question “can online journalism be expected to live up to the quality that professional writers create vs. frequently untrained or casual writers?”
Obviously bloggers cannot replace journalists, but journalists must think about their feature, paper newspapers are slowly moving towards the death. In a few more years paper will be completely replaced with digital readers. So I would advice them to start getting familiar with online publishing and blogging.
