I want to get Tivo, but I have DirectTv, should i just get a reg Tivo and pay $12.95/mo or should i get the directtv box with Tivo and I think it is only $4.99/mo?  Is there really any difference?  I also want to get one for my parents for xmas, so I hope it is easy enough to use.  I’d appreciate any input.  Thanks!

I think in terms of DirectTV, its good to buy the tivo receiver if you are just starting your package. Otherwise, you might spend too much money on it. If you can reuse the receiever in another room of the house, thats a bonus.

I don’t use tivo, I use SageTV on my computer. Its completely customizeable, and easier to export that video to other computers or a DVD.

What kind of set-up do you have? I was actually thinking of calling up time warner and asking how much the tivo was from them for cable.

This post has pictures of my computer, http://gearlive.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=709

And this is a picture of the setup:

The computer is at the bottom, underneath the TV. It blends in perfectly. I have a USB remote that works with the computer to control everything.

Well since you already have DirectTV, getting the DirectTiVo would be a better idea. The things you’d be missing is the Home Media Service. It allows you to share shows between TiVo Boxes, view Pictures and listen to MP3s on your TV.  And a couple other things. Check out http://www.tivocommunity.com they can answer your questions a whole lot better. And when you do set up your tivo service please use me as your referrer!  :D PM me for more info.

nice setup tighr-and your place is very clean!  👏  good job!

I went and bought the directtv w/ tivo recievers yesterday, but wont be setting them up until after xmas, since one is an xmas gift for my parents.  im not so concerned with the photo sharing and mp3 playing, so I guess its not that bad….besides, ill be paying $4.99 a month instead of $12.95, so i guess its a good deal.  I hope the guy at the store set it up right, i told him like 3 times we already have directtv, but i have a feeling he put me in as a new customer.  @$$!  LOL.  I guess I will see….i know I will love having Tivo!
