I just don’t understand how they lost it… thats the funny (funny=sad) part. And especially coming from the airport in New Jersey. Just goes to show that we haven’t come that far in the past 4 years.

Associated Press
December 16, 2004

NEWARK, N.J.—Baggage screeners at Newark Liberty International Airport spotted—and then lost—a fake bomb planted in luggage by a supervisor during a training exercise.

Despite an hourslong search Tuesday night, the bag, containing a fake bomb complete with wires, a detonator and a clock, made it onto an Amsterdam-bound flight.

“This really underscores the importance of the TSA’s ongoing training exercises,” said Ann Davis, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, the agency responsible for screening passengers and baggage for weapons and explosives. “At no time did the bag pose a threat, and at no time was anyone in danger.”

Earlier this month, French authorities lost a bag containing real explosives that were being used to train bomb-sniffing dogs. That led French authorities to prohibit the use of live explosives in future tests.

The Newark incident was only the latest embarrassment for screeners at one of the airports from which some of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers took off.

In October, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported screeners missed one in four fake explosives and weapons in secret weekly tests conducted throughout the summer.

In Tuesday night’s test, a TSA supervisor secretly placed the bomb, which was designed to resemble the plastic explosive Semtex, inside a bag that was put through screening machines, Davis said.

A baggage screening machine sounded an alarm, but workers somehow lost track of the bag, which was then loaded onto a Continental Airlines flight.

I fly all the time… I’m not afraid. Everyone has to go sometime I guess.. lol.. okay.. that is just sooo wrong.. but true.

I read that article in the paper. It was rather not surprising if you ask me. I’m always amazed on the lack of interest the screeners take in our belonging…very interesting.. you should watch them next time.. you’ll freak out..

I’m always surprised that our plane tickets cost that much when the screeners aren’t doing their jobs. What a waste of money. The whole airline industry is a total joke. No reason that a plane ticket should cost as much as it does. I’m flying a 3 leg trip this break, and I’ll be on 6 planes. It should cost me 50 bucks each flight, but due to crazy prices, it costs much more than that.

ummm.. your plane ticket doesn’t pay their salaries…only a small percentage goes towards that. 😉

Heh I fly all the time.  I think the french mistake is much worse, but security is crap, they should just get rid of it since it isn’t making a difference anyways.  I shouldn’t have to waste so many hours being checked, when they aren’t even finding what they’re searching for.

I can’t wait to get on my airplane trips this break, especially to all those highly sensitive cornfields i’ll be going to  I don’t think terrorists have much to gain in blowing up a flight in Tulsa, OK.

Umm… they could just take over it and fly to wherever they want. People thinking that it will never happen on a certain flight to a certain plane are usually easier to target since they are no expecting anything or looking out for anything suspicious.

Ok, let me revise that to say that a flight from Indianapolis to Tulsa isn’t highly suspect since it flies nowhere near anything of importance.

Still doesn’t save you from the fact that they could just Hi-Jack it and take it wherever they want ... well not wherever, but wherever the fuel may take them.

LOL. Nice choice of words ... but it’s true though…. Anything can happen if security is overlooked. They need to look at every Airport as if it were a popular airport.

There are risks with every thing every day ... we are just saying that security should not be an issue to be taken lightly. Just because you think no one knows about that certain town, doesn’t mean nothing will ever happen there. It always happens where you least expect it. That’s how it hurts us the most.
