A “review” for the 20Gig iPod:
I checked out this movie Iron Eagle like two or three months ago. It’s all about this dude who’s a seriously badass jet pilot that goes into enemy territory to rescue his dad who’s a P.O.W. But the seriously badass part of the movie is this: the dude straps a Walkman to his leg when he flies and pops in a tape of unreal-style feel good guitar anthems to get him pumped up when he’s tearing through the skies.
So I took his technique and adopted it at work. I walk around the office with a walkman strapped to my leg (usually playing Highway To The Dangerzone from the Top Gun Soundtrack) to get pumped up when I have to do a bunch of account reports or TPS reports or whatever.
So keep that all in mind when I tell you, my frickin’ walkman crapped out on me when I was so pumped up I went into an air drum frenzy in my cubicle and accidentally smashed my walkman with an overly aggressive leg slap.
At lunch this dude I work with named Andy was like, “Dude, I know it’s only like 20 years past the 80’s but you should retire the walkman and just get an iPod.”
Andy knows a lot about junk like that so I was like, “Okay.” And I bought one.
Now I’ll give it this - it can hold many more songs than your standard audio cassette. But beyond that, I don’t know, I kind of like my walkman better. I mean you just don’t get the same feeling rubbing your finger over the touch sensitive play “button” on an iPod that you do when you frickin’ punch that nice hard plastic play BUTTON on a walkman to hear the first notes of a sweet Loggins track kick in.
Also it’s really small, which is good for some people, but having it strapped to my leg just looks kind of dumb, whereas my walkman looks seriously badass.
I have a few more weeks to check it out before I have to return it, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to stick with the walkman. And anyone who would disagree with me, I’d say two things to you:
1. Go rent Iron Eagle
2. Strap a walkman to your leg like the dude in Iron Eagle and tell me you don’t feel seriously badass walking around the office while everyone else is listening to their iPods at their desks.
