1. FFVI (3 in the US): best characters, plot, and magic system. The music was fantastic too. Can we say Kefka?
2. Chrono Trigger: addictive as hell with great characters and plot
3. Phantasy Star IV: great characters, plot, and kick ass magic
4. Xenogears: it took 80 hours to beat this game and it was worth it. Killing god, a soylent green factory, mecha, and kung fu action!
5. Final Fantasy VII: who doesn’t like their main character to be utterly insane and the bad guy to be even more nuts?
Notable Mentions: Earthbound, Chrono Cross, Neverwinter Nights, Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics.
The final fantasys since VII have had mediocre plots, character development and most just bored me to death.
VIII was a gay raver fest with a horrendous magic system and love story I never cared about. There was something about an orphanage but I never cared.
IX was just plain forgettable but better than VIII.
X had Meg Ryan (tidus), bad voice-acting, a dull love story with the longest CG water/makeout sequence ever, and a boring ending which was impossible to die in. Boo-hoo my father is a giant monster thingy.
I never played X-2 because I hated the first one. The opening music-video sequence was enough to make me vomit.
I played FF XI for about three months but I stopped because you could never solo. Other than that it was a fun game.
Golden Sun, and it’s sequel. Both extremely hard games, along with some puzzles that will leave you very perplexed at times. Man, those bosses were a bitch.

I only played the first one and you’re right. The last boss took about 2 hours and I thought I was dead 20 times. That’s an endurance trial. Great game.

Oh, you thought the first game’s boss took long… :mischeif:
I played Star Ocean 2 for about 20 hours and I got bored with it. You had about 5 million various skills that you could learn that did absolutely nothing. As for Star Ocean 3, I won’t be purchasing it. Take a look at today’s Penny Arcade to learn more.
I liked this game called ashen empires, so fun and addicting. Im still fat from sitting on the comp addicted to that game. I only quit because it became p2p. It had a name before ashen empires, started with a D I think. Fun fun stuff though. I wonder if its still p2p….

I remember Earthbound! I hadn’t thought about that game in years. I don’t remember much about except it was a blast to play. I thought they were going to make a sequel to it but I have yet to find it.
The only RPG like game I’ve played recently is City of Heroes. However, I don’t really believe it falls solely under the RPG category.
