Well, lets see. I have about 200 CDs ripped on my computer, and I still haven’t gotten to 20 gigs. So, a lot.

Well, if a song is on average 4 minutes long, and if a CD averages about 12-15 tracks per CD, and an iPod can hold 5000 songs, then 5000/15 = 333 CDs. So If you filled it with just CDs, then you could get well over 300 CDs, no problem. Thats 5000 songs, or 20,000 minutes worth of music, if 1 minute = 1 megabyte.

Table of conversions:

5,000 songs
20,000 minutes
333 Hours, 20 minutes
13 Days, 21 hours, 20 minutes
1 Week, 6 days, 21 hours, 20 minutes

well, you are an engineer and apparently good with math, so what bitrate would you have to record at to get only a megabyte a minute?

KNOWN: MP3s have size, bitrates, and time.
FIND: bitrate 1 MB recorded in 60 seconds
GIVEN: 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 KB = 8 kb
ANALYSIS:

1024 KBytes * 8 bits/Byte = 8192 Kbits

8192 Kbits / 60 seconds = 136.533 kbits/s (kbps)

So for an mp3 to be exactly 1 megabyte per minute, it would need to be at 136.533 kbps.

Most people record at common bitrates like 128, 164, 192 or 256, so your milage may vary. I myself record at 192 exclusively, with the rare 256 exception.

AAC has better quality than mp3 thus enabling you to rip at a smaller bit rate than mp3 which makes the files smaller.
