I stand with the “Bad/Good” crew. I listen to just about everything, and in each genre, there’s always a band/song(s) that I think sux. Its good to have an open mind about music, especially since different types of music are starting to fuse together.

[quote author=“Andreux”]To be honest, I can’t really stand jazz all that much. Probably ‘cause it’s so goddamn American. Hehe—no offense to you Yanks out there, I mean, I am one myself. Just… apple pie, baseball games, and jazz… there has to be more to the world than this.

:?

What does the fact that it’s American created have to do with the actual musical quality itself?!? I have no idea what you mean.

If you wanna get technical, Jazz was spawned out of styles from two continents besides America: Europe (for the harmonic structure and instrumentation) and Africa (for its complicated rhythms and its heavy reliance of improvisation). They were mixed in America mostly by the decendants of slaves. The “Birthplace” of Jazz is considered to be New Orleans. There were other inspirations like the Negro Spirituals and such.

Yes, Jazz more than any other style of music is “American”, but I hardly associate it with Baseball and Apple Pie. Jazz in recent times has become more intellectual and not mainstream at all, so I don’t see the correlation.

Sorry for seeming elitist with my response, but I’m just confused :?

“It’s ridiculous claiming that video games influence children. For instance, if Pac-man affected kids born in the 80s, we should by now have a bunch of teenagers who run around in darkened rooms with flashing lights and eat pills while listening to monotonous electronic music.”

I don’t think i have a single genre that I dislike more than the other—there are artist/singers/groups in all genres that I can’t stand hearing—but I think that all have their plus’

I just dun like jazz =\ And not for its American-ness. I said that was the *probable* reason why I did not like it. I honestly don’t know why I don’t like it. It’s so boring =\ My boyfriend keeps defending it though, saying it’s, like, the only genre of music that *purely* follows music theory. I tend to believe him ‘cause he went to Berklee College of Music and studied all of this crap, but I don’t know if he’s lying about that anyway. =P

Still, I just dun like it… haha

Wow. If you think Jazz is boring, I don’t know what to say. Besides stop listening to smooth jazz stations. Jazz is one of the least boring styles out there, just for the fact that every time you hear a song being performed, it’s a totally different experience. The nature of jazz is to play the head, or the main section of the song, then solo over it, and the solo is totally made up on the fly. If that isn’t exciting then I just don’t know what is.

Maybe you just don’t understand it (and it’s no biggie if you don’t)? If not, then give some jazz singers a listen, like Jane Monheit, Dianne Reeves, Cassandra Wilson, and Diana Krall. All great singers, all great music, all easier to digest than the more hardcore instrumental jazz.

Not saying that you’re wrong to not like Jazz, but your reasoning just sounds a little bit ignorant or not well thought out. BTW, your boyfriend is right. Without music theory, it’s extremely hard to play jazz well, moreso than any other style of music (yes, even Classical).

Yeah, I should listen to a bit more jazz. I know the type of jazz I have always listened to has been the “hardcore instrumental jazz” that you mentioned. My parents like that stuff a lot. Maybe that’s why I don’t like it either =P LOL

But yeah, I’ll give those artists a try =)

I like a little bit of everything, some more than others. When I was growing up, my parents would always be playing their records. Bob Segar, Journey, YES, Foreigner, ZZ Top, Van Halen, Queen, John Mellencamp, KISS, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, The Four Seasons, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, and a bunch of other performers that I cant remember the names of. So I can tolerate listening to those.

I can listen to rap in a fun, non-serious, way.

I mainly listen to metal and punk though.

Good : Classic Rock, Modern Rock, Country, Yugoslavian music ( 8) ), Classical Music, Blues, some Jazz

Bad: Rap, Hardcore Heavey Death Metal Rock

I dunno, I like alot of different types of music. I do like a few rap songs, and maybe like only one heavey hardcore death metal song. But, in the general sense, I don’t like rap and the hardcore heavey death metal songs.
