Do you feel that rap has taken over music?

[quote author=“ridv3490”][quote author=“TheNewDeal”]I just have to say, saying anything is “taking over music” is vague.  If you mean MTV (which is what now, 8% music/92% reality shows?), radio (which has tons of stations for every genre) or, say top 40 “hits”?... you can stand to have some sort of argument.  I think rap has gained quite a bit of popularity in the Suburbs and with younger kids, but it is not “taking over music” by any sense.

Everyone who is getting into these heated discussions about hating a type of music is kind of ridiculous, how can you hate an ENTIRE genre of music? There are so vast, with so many different types.  I’m not a huge rap fan, but groups like The Roots, Wyclef, and the Beastie boys are just so solid.

“Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it first” - Ben Harper

The Beastie Boys are different. They are more of Rock combined with Hip-Hop much like Linkin Park is Rap combined with Rock. I don’t mind those bands but I can’t stand anything else. Like 50 cent and his candy shop. As your your taking over statement, we only listen to what they want us to hear (Reel Big Fish anyone) And that mostly controls what mainstream people(Most of the people that listen to music) hear. Thus if they play more rap more people will listen to that more.
And you said it yourself its taking over the younger kids which is infact the new generation so how could you say that it’s not taking over if the next generation mostly listens to that?

Beleive it or not, younger suburban kids do not make up the majority of “music,” and I know my music tastes have changed a ton since i was a younger teen.  I’m not a big radio fan, but my personal opinion is that rap is not taking over music as a whole.  I’m really not that opinionated in this matter, just trying to say that

1) people should not judge a book by its cover (i.e. rap sucks because lil jon only says 4 words)

2) Music is so many different things to so many different people, so maybe a more accurate question would be “is rap taking over mainstream music?”

btw… reel big fish are great 😊

I certainly have. And since I’m a rock listener its not a good thing. Everytime I put on MTV hits there is a crappy rap song on talking about how a guy would like to do this girl from the back. Im so sick of it. I mean look at the Billboard award winners there are almost no groups or artist that won something that werent rap.

Agreed. I just looked at the winers for the billboard awards and I was very angry. I was even more angry when I looked at the billboard hot 100 list to find out that Vertigo is at 31 ?! and all the songs on top of it are crap rap and reggeton songs.

They arent my favorite. But if I ever listen to rap I listen to them. The rhymes arent about someones balls being sweaty. They are more about everything thats awsome.

Its the way it should be. Eminem is just one rapper that will last and be remembered for at most 20 more years. Bands like the rolling stones, beatles, and AC DC will be remembered forver, because they are much greater than some white boy who takes black music to talk about his crappy life. Get over your self em.

Also Rock and most other types of music require a person to learn to play an insturement. Hell all you have to do for rap is either be black or spanish, make any beat, sit down and take stuff like fizzle forizzel and make it into sentences.

to say rap was only good in the 80’s is ignorant and a poor attempt at sounding cool or sounding like you know what you are talking about.

How can you say you dont like or listen to rap and then profess to say you know when it was produced at it’s best?

How can you say rap is bad when all you listen to or are expossed to is rap that is on MTV or the radio?

How can you say rap is taking over music when Country sells the most every year?

How can you say rap is “black music” and that white people shouldnt do it when rock came from Blues which is “black music”?

1.Ok bud let me kick it off with saying what you did just now is a poor attempt to make me look stupid.

2. of all I can say that I dont like rap and I dont listen to rap because in all honesty I dont. I dont think guys like little jon make good music. What that hell is a song like Salt Shaker doing in the billboard charts. Its just a bunch of guys saying “shake it like a salt shaker for gods sake” . And dont even get met started on Get low. Even Chris Rock said that was the dirtiest most meaningless song ever.

3., I can say when it was produced at its best because I used to listen to rap. People like Tupac and Biggy were real rappers. They both rapped about life, not some two bit whore they found on the street for 3 cents that gave them good head. And also grandmaster flash and the furious five, run dmc, dough e fresh. Those guys rapped about life and fun stuff, and also to be the best MC. Not like I just mentioned girls with big bazookas that are selling themselves on the streets.

4.,You are telling me what I’ve listened to? I’m sorry but that is just hillarious considering the fact I’ve never met you.

5., Look at the billboard charts hot 100 track list. Do you see Jon doe with my pup ran away yet again? No, all you see is Lil jon and Ludacris. Why? Because Rap music HAS taken over the music industry. You cant turn on the radio with outh hearing Jay-z or some other dude rapping about stupid things.
6. It did evolve from that. And I’ll never deny it. How ever is rock blues? No. It has evolved to somethign different. You are basically saying to me that just because a father had a son the son is EXACTLY like him. Knowning science, thats is virtually impossible. So I can say that.

haha, did you say “Bud”? what are you a comic character?

you keep referencing cats like lil jon which makes me realize THAT is all you are exposed to currently. You keep talking about billboard charts which makes me realize you are REALLY worried about sales and radio spins.  BTW, your right, 2pac nor biggie ever rapped about “bitches.”... oh wait…. And how are you gonna say cats like doug e rapped about “fun stuff” and then be mad about Lil Jon, how is it different really?

Be aware that there is ALOT more music out there than just whats on the radio. Maybe Rap is taking over commercial music (but ill say it again Country out sells everything every year) but you yourself said you listen to stuff that isnt on the radio/t.v. so that should lead you to realize that its not all people listen to. You are the proof that debunks your argument.

And you maintain that 80’s rappers all rapped about “real life” but current rappers don’t? I’m not gonna sit here and claim that every rapper that talks about killing is a killer OR say that every rapper that claims to be a pimp is actualy a pimp BUT that doesnt stop the stories from being true. Just like biggie’s mom said in the documentary “2pac & Biggie”: [Paraphrasing] He had a good life but he was telling the story for those who couldnt tell it themselves.

Now Trendy Mendy, get over yourself and your lack of rap knowledge. Why dont you go and LOOK for other rap besides refering to lil jon (btw, you really hate him dont you, lol. thats funny cuz Rick Rubin gives him his props but you cant…) you will see that there is more good rap than bad. Check out OkayPlayer, QN5, Non-Prophets, M.O.P., Blackalicious and more and then tell me about rap being dumb and foney. And saying you can talk about rap because you use to listen to it (which i doubt) means that you no longer listen to it WHICH MEANS YOU CANT COMMENT ON IT NOW. Or did you not realize that lil hole in your argument when you were typing?

You have yet to prove to me that you were around in the 80’s listenin to rap. And infact you have solidified to me the fact that you WEREN’T because the 80’s artists that you listed are simply the ones people still talk about. You sound like every other wanna-be outside the box thinker who thinks they are cool because they rock a RunDMC trucker hat or have a repressed vinyl by Grandmaster Flash.

Oh and BTW…. (some) Rap ##### on (most) Rock, lol.

Look I can write a paper on this if you want me to. Point is my opinion is different from yours. But just to keep this a live let me take down some of your points.

1. What does saying “bud” have to do with being comic?... Nothing IMO.

2. Hmm lil’ jon is a cat? Who knew. A rapping cat 😛 . Im also exposed to Usher and other rappers. Usher I dont really mind, but guys like Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Faboulous, Chingy and such I do mind. Why because they rap about stupid things and make millions off your broke ass.

3.  Unless you didnt know sales represent how much people like something. If people dont like it THEY ARE NOT going to buy it. By the way, you keep saying Country sells out. Where da hell are you getting this from? I mean I know the U.S. is full of rednecks but where are your sources for this?

4.“Cats” Doug E Fresh had some skills, and I’ll always give him props for it, he could beat box.

5. I didnt say all of the new ones never rap about life. But most dont. They all rap about girls, or their money, or their rides, and they say the N word about 40 times in a minute. Im sorry but I despise new rap, and I will not like any of it. Ill never be able to like new rap.

6. And I did use to listen to it. Some great tracks that I used to listen to were Runnin’, and Through the wire. I still listen to Run DMC, they are completely different from anything else. Run and DMC are true MC’s and its a shame Jam Master Jay had to be killed.

7. You repeated yourself twice. And I can comment on it, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and can say what ever they like. Its called freedom of speech.

8. Hey I wasnt around when they were at their peak. But I can still read about it cant I? No one right now was alive back in the Roman empire but we still know about it dont we? Its history and if you choose to learn it then you learn it. Im not an outside the box thinker, I never think im cool and I dont wear any tipes of hat. And no vinyls, sorry.

9. Your last comment is nothing more than an opinion.
