Gear Live is going to put up a Holiday Gift Guide, and we want the help of our board members.
Recommend the coolest tech gifts you can think of, and include a link if possible. Also, include the type of gift receiver it is for (ie- Fathers, Women, Teens, College Students, Professionals, etc.).
Kids/Teens/“The Geek who has everything” - Robosapian Sure, they’ve received a lot of hype this year, but they’re still damn cool toys.
Moms/Grandmas/Friends that scrapbook or take lots of pics - Microsoft Digital Imaging Suite 10.0 A very user friendly photo editing package. Good for those that may not be tech saavy, but could gain from getting more out of their software.
Every stocking on the mantle - Microsoft Optical Mouse by S+arck An ambidextrous mouse is always a good thing, but the design of this mouse is quite cool. It’s got a great look and feel to it.
Roomba Discovery SE Robotic Floor Vac
With more people working and less time spent cleaning the house, instead of hiring an expensive maid just buy a Roomba this year. Just place it in your room which needs cleaning and let it do the rest. It drives around on its own and creates a virtual path in it memory and embers where it has previously cleaned so it is cleaning a different area all the time. When its gets to furniture it senses that something is in front of it and turns away from it.
Teens-IPODPhoto The age group most likely to have gigabytes upon gigabytes of music 😉 , iPods for teens are practical. Having the newest and latest color screen helps out too. http://www.apple.com/ipodphoto/
Anyone(except seniors^^) Sony Ericsson S710a. The newest DIGITAL camera phone, this gadget here has a swivel to move from digital camera mode to phone mode. The camera has a whopping 1.3 megapixels(best quality for camera phones). http://www.sonyericsson.com/
Females- Canon PowerShot A95 I know for a fact that females like to take pictures more than men(what with their fine selves 8) ) and this camera would be perfect for them. Compact and powerful, I can recommend this personally. The image quality is amazing, and you can find it at an affordable price(for a 5 megapixel camera) anywhere from around $280-350. http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=10468
if youre feeling extra generous, and have a movie freak friend, son, etc (under 40), give him/her a headstart in the age of portable digital media; give them a portable video player! iriver, samsung, creative, archos, and rca have released their first generation of pvps. i would suggest getting one without microsoft’s media player os, as it doesnt support unprotected music, taking away alot of freedom that us geeks cherish the most. id suggest getting the iriver PMP 120 (NOT PMC). it can be found for a little over $400 in some online shops.
another suggestion that works for almost anyone would to buy them a flat panel moniter. anyone can testify to how amazing of a different a flat panel, from the less eye strain to crystal clear sharpness. shoot for 17” and a 25 ms response time, which currently seems to hold the best bang for the buck of flat panels. as for specific models, i would suggest visiting http://www.viewsonic.com. i really love this company, they seem to have the best quality at a competitive pricepoint as well. if youre buying for a gamer, you may want to buy a 12ms or 16ms, in order to eliminate the “ghosting” effect that plagues flat panels during its infant stages… good luck and merrry christmas to all of gearlive :D
[quote author=“omcantu”]Dad into sports - DVR
Kids - Those portable video players (video now and such)
Teens - Newest Game/Cell phone
DVR - The 80 HR version
Any dad that is into sports probably works and more than likely rushes home after work whenever there’s a sporting even on tv. By giving this DVR to them, they will not have to rush home and see the game whenever they want (not to mention they can fast forward the commercials)
For every one 16 years and older can always use Pioneer AVIC-N1 a flip up touch screen DVD player and GPS system. If they have been really good, this would be an awesome gift for any one with a car. PRICE=$1500-$2000
And then for all teens and most adults could use a pair of OAKLEY THUMP sunglasses with a built in MP3 player. This can range from around $300 for a 128 MB to $500 for a 256 MB.
And for EVERY ONE on your christmas list, yes even you (the parents), a good personal DVD player. Why go with a VideoNow? You have to buy there discs, a little screen, and can cost a whole lot more in the long run. You cant go rent VideoNow discs, but you CAN rent some DVDs. And the best thing is you can get these DVD players for around $100 maybe even less. BestBuy is running a in-store special this week, TWO DVD players for onlt $199! Here a 7” DVD player at Wal-Mart.com for $150.
Kids - Nintendo DS + games Age 18+ - Motorola Razr V3 Women - - Too hard to judge, just go with a gift certificate =p College Students - IPOD / DVD Burner (hey, when you are on a short budget who cares about the MPAA =) Grandpa - Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver (they’ll love 24/7 Elvis) Grandma - Brother QL-500 Quick PC Label Printer (they tend to forget things, or even what they are) Mom- Sony MV-900SDS ( keep the kids in the back of the van busy. Dad- Nikon Laser 500G LaserCaddy ( self explanatory )
For the teens: ———————-videogame(s): James Bond, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Halo 2, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2…
All of these games are loved by teenagers that have the console to play them on…and if they don’t have the console..go ahead and get it for them!! They’ll love it (X-box, PS2, Nintendo DS, etc)
———————-for the teenage girls:
how about some jewelry, can’t go wrong there…but can get quite pricey: specifically, these stud earings
or maybe some good ol’ perfume/scents/etc for her:
here’s a few random ones that i don’t know much about but did a search on the most wanted perfume of 2004 and thes came up: Scents
For the toddlers/little kids: —————————-toy(s): Can’t go wrong with the awesome robosapian but is at a pretty high price ($79.99).
My favorite is the ‘Classic Games Revamped - Buckaroo, Twister, Monopoly & Cluedo - Traditional Boxed Games’ ...all of those classics remade, I’m sure any child and adult with find these interesting.
for the girls: Dora the Explorer (We Did It Dancing Dora) ....Dora is great gift for that little girl who loves watching Dora.
For the drinker in your family you cant go wrong with The Jager On Tap Machine (Thats what I’m getting). Chills your jager down to 20 degrees below freezing and is great for a party or home bar. http://www.tapmachineinc.com
For someone with way too much time on their hands I would recommend World of Warcraft it’ll suck all of their time away. http://www.worldofwarcraft.com
And for anyone that carries around alot of things all the time (pda, cell phone, portable videogames, digital camera) the ScottEvest 3.0 is just the thing.
