What movies actually come in Divx format, and why would anyone even purchase them?  I thought that Divx was dead at launch because no one would pay for limited viewings of their films.  I notice some PVP’s play that format, but wouldn’t it be better to be able to rip ordinary DVD’s?

It is two different things. The Divx format has nothing to do with the DVD’s. The DVD’s were ones that would expire and stop working after a certain time period. So you could rent a Divx DVD and throw it away for example.

They dont do that anymore - but we do have teh Divx CODEC compression format, which is just a way to squeeze movies down into smaller file sizes.

Oh I see.  Why do they have the same names, that’s so confusing.  Well, maybe it’s because they share some of the technology.
