LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J., Nov 05, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX)—Air National Guard officials investigated Friday an apparently accidental attack by one of its jet fighters on a middle school.
Late Wednesday night, when several custodians were at the Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School, an F-16 fighter jet fired about two dozen 20mm training rounds at the south Jersey coastal facility, which is 3.5 miles from the National Guard’s Warren Grove bombing range, the Cherry Hill Post reported.
The pilot was engaged in a night training exercise.
An estimated six to eight rounds hit the school’s roof and another five hit the parking lot at about 10:15 p.m. No injuries or deaths were reported.
The F-16, assigned to the 113th Wing of the District of Columbia Air National Guard in Maryland, discharged the 2 inch shells from its automatic M61 A1 cannon.
“We do not know why the gun fired,” said Brian Webster, commander of the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard. “We need to go find out what happened and what went wrong.”
The school was closed Thursday and Friday for a teachers conference but is expected to be repaired and inspected in time to reopen Monday.
