Why is it that sound doesn’t carry in space?

[quote author=“antman22”]so…i could technically fart in space, and NO sound would be made….i guess the term breaking wind would be out of the question also….

Actually, [and I’m not 100% on this], but due to no oxygen I doubt there would be any smell either—a good thing if you ask me.  :D

Is the environment too dense to transmit sound waves?  Thought I’d include a pic for fun.

Here ya go—not too technical

When sound hits an object [matter], it can/will cause the object to vibrate, which creates sound as we know it.—Since there is no matter in a vacuum or outer space, its density is zero and therefore is no sound there. Sound requires matter to vibrate. Basically, any action in space can be measured by a straight line.  Sound on earth as we know it looks like this:

If something explodes, there is plenty of matter vibrating though.  I don’t see how you need matter outisde of that to hear it.   By the way, I’m glad to see the response wasn’t: “Because you touch yourself at night” like it is on other forums.  :D

Technically though, in space, objects don’t actually explode [no oxygen], they do the exact opposite—they implode—therefore, there would be no initial force to project ‘sound’,  therefore, after the implotion,  there is technically plenty of matter,  but since the initial action never created anything that resembled a sound wave nothing will bounce off of the imploded item [matter]—keep in mind that space is a giant vaccum therefore if it was possible for matter to implode into itself, it would—

IE—A space shuttle cannot have oxygen in it, because as it pressurized it would collapse into iself.

So, if a tree falls in space an no one is around to hear it it definitely wouldn’t make a sound.  😉

For some reason ever since I was a little kid I was great an remembering information that for the most part is useless but may come in handy at some point—I’m the self proclaimed useless knowledge base.  8)

Right, but in order to not be consumed by the vaccuum you’d be in a space suit, and that suit would have oxygen supply. And it’d be cramped quarters. So I would have to highly reccomend NOT doing that.
