I used to watch the old Siskel and Ebert/Ebert and Roeper shows, plus read newspaper reviews and magazines like Empire, Premiere and Sight and Sound. But days have changed, and am wondering how people find their movies of choice these days. Just from the trailers, or a consensus of movie critics? Entertainment Weekly is actually pretty good too at assessing popular culture these days. But what happened to movie criticism, and does anyone care anymore? I know newspapers have cut way back on criticism now, probably syndicating most reviews.
I just started re-watching At the Movies with the two new (permanent?) reviewers A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips. It’s much better than before. I do find it frustrating, though, when a movie critic overpraises mediocrity.
