Blink-182 is going on the blink.

In an announcement from its record label that stopped short of saying the punk-pop trio had disbanded, the group was described as being “on indefinite hiatus.”

Television viewers may recognize “hiatus” as an old network term meaning “when your favorite show gets canceled, but nobody has the heart to tell you to your face.”

Befitting Blink-182’s newly murky status, Geffen Records said there was no timetable for the band to start being a band again.

“No one knows what tomorrow may bring,” the label said in a statement.

Rumors of Blink-182’s demise were sparked when the group was a last-minute scratch, along with Ozzy Osbourne, at a tsunami-relief benefit concert Friday in Anaheim, California. Osbourne’s absence was explained as being prompted by a “family emergency”; Blink-182’s was chalked up to “unforeseen circumstances.”

A rep for Geffen confirmed that the “unforeseen circumstances” was the band’s unraveling. There weren’t details as to what went down, only that after rehearsals the word hiatus began being bandied about.

The official story is that guitarist/singer Tom DeLonge, 29, bassist Mark Hoppus, 32, and drummer Travis Barker, 29, want to spend time “enjoying the fruits of their labors with loved ones.”

“For over a decade, Blink-182 has toured, recorded and promoted non-stop all while trying to balance relationships with family and friends,” Geffen Records said.

Founded in San Diego in the early 1990s as Blink with original drummer Scott Raynor, the retitled band made its major label debut in 1999 with Enema of the State. The album was the unofficial soundtrack of skate parks everywhere, spawning the sometimes-jokey, always-catchy hit singles “All the Small Things,” “Adam’s Song” and “What’s My Age Again.”

Two more studio albums have followed for the tattooed trio: 2001’s Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, and 2003’s self-titled release. Last summer, the band headlined a tour with fellow Southern California rockers No Doubt.

Barker, who joined the band in 1998, already has a side project set. He’ll debut in April in the new MTV reality series Meet the Barkers, about him, his beauty queen wife and their children.

If the show does well, don’t expect the word hiatus to come up anytime soon.

:?

anyone know about this?

I agree, I hate pop-punk.  Too many bands like that these days, green day, Simple Plan, new found glory, they all suck.

I just read on someone’s blog that two of the Blink 182 members are forming a band of their own that might be incorporating female vocals.

Anyone else heard about this? :?

Thanks a lot for the link Andrew. I hope the band is good, as we will probably never hear blink-182 the way it used to be ever again.

There is a BIG difference between “Punk” and “Punk Rock”. “Punk” would be Sid Vicious takeing a chunk of glass and carveing all over himself during a concert or Iggy Pop jumping off stage into a huge pill of glass then rolling in it. “Punk Rock” is pretty much the same style of playing but softer then the real punk music. In my oppion….

PUNK: Sex Pistols

PUNK ROCK: OLD Green Day

I think Blink 182 would be a soft punk rock because “Pop Punk” or “Poser pop” would be Ashlee Simpson or Aviral Lavigne. Blink 182 is a lot funner to listen to and more talented then anybody in poser pop and pop punk. Unlike “PUNK” they dont talk a lot about anarchy. They talk more about love and other stuff. Witch can make people think they are pop but I dont see them as Britany Speers. To me they are a soft punk rock that is funny and tallented…...but no Sex Pistols heh

As for Green Day. (I have all 10 albums) They went one dirrection in they’r first 9 albums then in “American Idiot” they stoped playing the same, started dressing like idiots, they’s “Lyrics” are TOTALLY different and they even sound different. I like the OLD Green Day but the new Geen Day is just to stupid for me. 😊

THE BAND I THINK IS CALLED PLUS 44 AND its travis and mark.  i heard a lil about it on fuse.  😉 mark said it’d be kinda drum and bassy, and that travis was recording elctornic drums and then laying a live drum track over that.  i think i tivoed it.  ill see if i can find it and put exactly what he said…........

i agree that blink is a soft puck rock.  that doesnt mean i dont like them, though.  i like all sorts of music, and im sad that blink 182 broke up.

with green day, i totally agree that they changed a lot.  ive been listening to them since i was around 7, and american idiot changed who they are.  having said that, i still like american idiot (mainly for the lyrics).
