Story #1
one day I was visiting my grandmother in NYC and noticed a 40gb HD for $30 at CompUSA… not a bad price considering I had an old computer with a burnt-up HD. I went into the store, found the large display of HD’s (suspiciously still full, it looked like none had been bought). I picked my 40gb (a Maxtor, btw) and went to the register to buy it. of course, there was the inevitable half-hour wait in line. i bought the HD, only to find that i was still charged the standard $80, and was given a rebate reciet to fill out. when i got back to Kentucky (where I lived at the time), i filled out the rebate and sent it to whatever rebate company CompUSA used. the HD was defective, but thats another story  . a few weeks later i received a form postcard from OfficeMax saying that my rebate for Belkin CD cases was invalid. i knew that Belkin didn’t make CD cases, and also that i had never, ever shopped at OfficeMax. i checked rebate central (or whatever the it was) and it said that my rebate tracking information was incorrect, even though i searched many time over using different parts of the info (email… item#... name… tracking number…). i tried to call OfficeMax and explain the problem, but got put on perpetual hold… waiting 3 hours before my calling card ran out
I still have the defective HD, which turned out to not be returnable except at the retail location where it was purchused, all the was in NYC…
Story #2
i purchased a router and PCI 802.11g adaptor to spreadd a roadrunner line between us and our downstairs neighbor to cut the cost a bit. everything went as smoothly as can be expected until i rebooted the downstairs computer.. blue screen (you know what i mean :x ). i reinstalled several times but still got the screen. i tried to return to NewEgg(who i still love), but was told that it would only be replaced with one ofthe same model. it took 18 days to ship, and a long time to coach it to work right, so 30 days had passed. now i live in Hawaii, so shipping of anything is outrageous. i obtained an RMA, and sent it back, hoping to get it within the 14 day window. that is the stage i’m at now, currently kicking myself realizing that the cost of all the trouble (cost of shipping+cost of not splitting the roadrunner line for a month) is more than the cost of a card at wallyworld 😢 ... the futility of life…
