Quote of the Day: Crystal Renn Hates the Word Plus-Size

Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, Health & Beauty, Models, News,

“Part of the problem is this focus on straight sizes and plus sizes. It is creating an ‘us and them’ mentality. We need to change the way we approach the whole thing, and do away with these terms. All we are is a bunch of models, no matter what size. Among women at large there’s no separation into straight sizes and plus sizes. The term ‘plus-size’ leaves the public confused. In the industry a size eight is considered plus. In the wider world women don’t think like that.”

Why Roberto Cavalli Began Designing Clothes

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Celebrities, Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, Models, News,
Roberto Cavalli became a fashion designer after making love to a pretty model.
The Italian style legend admits his first ever runway show was “terrible” because he was preoccupied with one of his female catwalk stars. “It was terrible. It wasn’t designing. I chose a pretty shy model and, of course, I make love with her. That was why I start to be in fashion,” he said, discussing his first show in Paris, France, in 1970.
Roberto decided to turn to art, and then fashion, after being urged by his mother to make up his mind on what career path to follow: “When I was 18, my mother said, ‘Roberto, you should go look for a job.’ I decided art was the only thing I would maybe like. I wanted a sports car and to enjoy life. I knew the more sweaters I printed, the more money I’d make.”
Roberto got his big break in the industry after discovering a unique six-color technique for printing on leather. “I showed people at Hermes in Paris. They wanted exclusivity on my idea. I thought, ‘If my idea is revolutionary, I should get to know the fashion world. I didn’t know anything about fashion, but thought it could be fun.”

Rihanna Respects Model Conscious Designers

Stylish R&B singer Rihanna doesn’t think there are enough black women in fashion. The “Rude Boy” singer believes her advertising campaign for fashion house Gucci was a “big deal” because it was such a break from convention.
“It’s clear there are definitely fewer black women in the high-fashion industry. One of the things I respected most about Gucci was that they did a print campaign with me. I’m a black girl on a fashion spread for Gucci - that was a big deal.”
The Barbados-born beauty also spoke of her “respect” for designers who refuse to stick to using slender, white women models and promote diversity on the catwalk.

Iman Wants More Collaborative Models

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Fashion Designers, Fashion Shows, Models, News,
Iman thinks it’s shame models no longer work closely with designers.
The supermodel - who was named as this year’s Fashion Icon at last night’s Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards - wishes the beauties of today were able to have more input into what they wear, like she did.
“In my day it was, ‘Do you like that? Would you wear it that way?’ You could be your own person. And nobody walked the same way on the runway. Don’t get me wrong, there are great girls today. But they have lost that role, of collaborating with the designers. There is not that relationship anymore.”
The Somalian-born beauty - who is married to music legend David Bowie - also admitted it was very flattering to be given the award and said she can’t wait for hot young designer Alexander Wang to now dress her: “The award came as a surprise but it does the ego good. I plan to take Alexander up on his offer to dress me now!”
Iman, 55, has had a diverse and wide-ranging fashion career, appearing as a high fashion model to designers including Calvin Klein and Yves Saint Laurent, and in 2007 she launched her own signature make-up line on the Home Shopping Network. She also works for a number of charities including the Children’s Defence Fund and Keep a Child Alive.
