A young TwiggyFashion icon Twiggy wanted to be a fashion designer when she was a teenager.

The British model, who became known in the 60s for her wide-eyed, striking appearance, designed and made her own clothes as a youngster and believes her unique outfits and designing skills are the reason she was successful as a model.

“My first memory of knowing exactly what I wanted to wear was when I was 13 - I was a mod and mod clothes were very specific. There weren’t really teenage clothes back then, so I made them myself. That was when I became very aware of fashion. In fact I became so obsessed with clothes that my plan was to go to art school and become a designer. In 1966 that all changed when I was discovered and started modeling. And I think my look had a lot to do with me being discovered. In one of the first shoots I ever did I was wearing bell bottoms in bright yellow jersey with big green petals appliquéd all over them that I’d made myself.”

These days, the 60-year-old beauty is inundated with beautiful, designer clothing: “I’m not a hoarder. I’ve got special pieces that were made for me by people such as Bill Gibb, Barbara Hulanicki and Ossie Clark that I hang on to, but sadly I didn’t keep everything from the 60s. I go through my wardrobe every few months - the family get first choice, then friends and the rest goes to Oxfam. Even so, I do have a walk-in wardrobe that’s full, but then you always fill the space you’ve got. I’m very lucky that I am given some wonderful clothes as gifts - and, if I’m going somewhere very special, my very nice designer friends will lend me something - but at heart, I’m a bargain-hunter.”

Erin O'Connor was pressured to get cosmetic surgeryEnglish model Erin O’Connor claims was told she needed cosmetic surgery in order to succeed.

The supermodel, who is known for her striking facial features, was originally criticized about her looks and was told she would have to go under the knife for a breast enlargement operation and nose job if she wanted to be a top model.

“In the early days of my modeling career, I think the industry was uncomfortable with how strikingly different I was. For example, I was told to have a nose job and get my breasts done.”

However, the 31-year-old beauty is thrilled she vowed to ignore the negative comments: “I suddenly got very stubborn and thought, ‘Well, no. This is me,’ and suddenly I was being hailed as ‘a new form of beauty.’”

The 6’ 1” tall model is now worried about the increase of people undergoing surgery to improve their self-confidence:

“I am concerned about ageism and the loss of beauty - the perception that as you grow older, you ‘lose your looks’, which I think is diabolical. I worry about how accessible cosmetic surgery has become. Of course, if it has genuinely helped people and their confidence has grown as a result, who am I to form an opinion? But I think there are better routes to confidence than trying to freeze time.”

Derek Lam Spring/Summer '10

Model Ginta Lapina seems to be fashion designer Derek Lam’s muse as of late—first was her runway appearance for his Spring/Summer ‘10 collection, then she showed up on his arm to the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards last week. Now it would appear as if she’s starring in the ad campaign for the aforementioned range!

“We went back to the beach, but it’s a dreamy world of cream-colored sand, highlighted by pops of color from vibrant clothing and accessories,” Creative Director Doug Lloyd said of the photo shoot.

Shot by Solve Sundsbo at Pier 59 Studio in New York, Lapina looks perfect strewn across the sandy beach in Lam’s fun polka dot print; her updo and make-up further accent the modern take on the 60’s-esque line. If only we, too, could be staring into the dreamy eyes of her onlooker!

Demi Moore's cover over Anja Rubik's runway body

Just when the talk of Demi Moore’s questionable W cover died down, someone out in the internet makes a discovery that brings everything back into the spotlight.

This time, bloggers are pointing to Balmain’s runway model, Anja Rubik, stating that W photo editors swapped Demi’s torso entirely in favor of Rubik’s! Both women (supposedly) wore the Balmain swimsuit with a wrap; however, placing the W cover over the catwalk photo (above) says that perhaps only one of them truly donned the look.

Gisele Bundchen during a Victoria's Secret showMove over, Heidi Klum—Gisele Bundchen has been named the world’s most valuable model.

The Brazilian beauty, who is currently expecting her first child with husband Tom Brady, topped The Daily Beast’s annual list, which took into account multi-year contracts, advertising campaigns, runway appearances and magazine covers.

Gisele beat Kate Moss into second place, while others in the top 10 included new mother Adriana Lima, Christy Turlington and Miranda Kerr.

The website said of the list, “We considered four tenets to illustrate a model’s visibility and success - multi-year contracts, advertising campaigns, runway appearances, and magazine covers. Those with retail licensing deals, including Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen, got credit for those estimated annual earnings, as well. Annual income from contracts, primarily negotiated by large cosmetic companies and Victoria’s Secret, were weighted 40 per cent because they are the most difficult to get, bear the largest salaries, and indicate a very high level of success.”

Check out the complete list after the jump.

Curvy Mariah CareyCelebrities really are like normal people—take Mariah Carey, for instance, who can’t bring herself to maintain a diet.

The “Hero” singer, whose weight has fluctuated in the past, admits that she is prone to piling on the pounds but says she could never deny herself her favorite foods.

“I’m very muscular. So I mustn’t lift weights. I should rather go swimming or do pilates. And of course I should stick to a diet. But I don’t want to do that. I’m always on the go. What could I eat and how would I be able to follow a diet?”

Mariah, 40, also says she would never want to be a size zero and thinks there is too much pressure placed on young girls to be unhealthily skinny: “It’s society’s fault. We grow up with these magazines which are full of size zero models. But people are just people. It’s about personal qualities. I don’t want to be a size zero. And also, I couldn’t be one. My bones would look very ugly. I am the happiest when my curvy parts fit into a US size six.”
