Billboard Music Awards 2013: the Good, the Bad, and the Sparkly

Nicki MinajWhile the Billboard Music Awards are no Met Gala, one would hope that the celebrities would at least aspire to such style for the event. Judging from the various frocks that graced Billboard's blue carpet, however, the musically-inclined celebs failed to put much effort into this awards show. Whether it was the Las Vegas heat or some overextended stylists (between the Met Gala, Cannes, and this, who can blame them?), the fashion at the Billboard Music Awards fell short with a few good looks and way too many shine-inducing materials.

The Good: American Idol judge Nicki Minaj, known for her colorful and over-the-top costumes, scaled back her look by opting for a red number which made her cleavage take center stage and yet still managed to look classy.

Country pop singer Shania Twain showed up in a silver-white Pavoni by Mikael D gown looking like a modern-day Greek goddess.

Hayden Panettiere - who currently stars in the country music television drama Nashville - opted for black like many others in attendance, but her simple, sleek floor-length dress was the best of them all.

The Bad: While sometimes less is more, the see-through sheer skirt on top of what looks like a corseted leotard is not doing House actress Jennifer Morrison any justice.

Someone in Audrina Patridge's entourage failed to remind her that the Billboard Music Awards are an awards show. The 28 year-old reality star looks like she's ready for a shopping trip rather than a red carpet event.

Even though I'm typically behind Miley Cyrus when it comes to her bold, unique fashion choices as of late, I can't get behind her sparkly, white version of a high fashion Harley Quinn costume.

The Sparkly: Jennifer Lopez went for a cross between sheer, sparkly, and her trademark super low v-neck cut in a gold Zuhair Murad gown. The woman can never go wrong on the red carpet.

Taylor Swift, on the other hand, looked a little too futuristic - not in a good way - in her glittery design (and somewhat like a candy wrapper of some sort).

Kelly Rowland also didn't choose her sparkly getup wisely, as she opted for something that resembled a bad shower curtain you would find in the discount bin at Target. It's clearly quite difficult to pull off shiny without being compared to an inanimate product of some sort.
