Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 2, Pick 5

Two basic business theories can be applied to fantasy basketball. “Consolidate your assets” is one. “Diversify your portfolio is the other.” The tone of the draft to this point has been to build strength on top of existing strengths. So far we have some pretty interesting combinations of guards (Ray Allen/Allen Iverson and Chris Paul/Steve Nash) and big men (Yao Ming/Andrei Kirilenko). There are a million ways to skin a cat, and possibly even more ways to build a successful fantasy team. Sometimes the right play is to follow a trend and other times it helps to take on a different strategy. With Elton Brand already in the fold and as solid as they come, it is time for the big to get bigger and you to get richer.

Round 2, Pick 3: Steve Nash, PG, Phoenix Suns
While I’m not usually one to stockpile a certain category in fantasy basketball, I have no shame in locking one up within my first two selections. How am I going to do that, you ask? Well, kind reader, by adding 10.5 assists per game to my fantasy roster, which also includes a guy who could one day, be dropping double-digits on his own. And while it disgruntles me as a fan to say it, the reigning two-time MVP will be a very nice fit on this fantasy roster.
With a guy that even Nelly Furtado finds time to rhyme about, there are only a few certain things in life. Death, taxes, and Steve Nash assists. Is there downside? Sure there is. However, it’s the promise, and the new hairstyle, that will have a welcomed home on this fantasy squad.

Round 2, Pick 2: Andrei Kirilenko, SF/PF, Utah Jazz
Can we all say it together? C’mon, only because we all know it:
Andrei Kirilenko is a first round talent, but there are some questions that only fantasy hoops drafters with ca-jo-nees the size of Ryan Seacrest’s ability to annoy will ignore and take Kirilenko as an answer for their team.
Okay, so I’m assuming that you think that Seacrest is annoying too (please, yes, just be out… from my presence and from the closet), but is there anyone on this earth that will admit he isn’t? Anyway, as I mentioned, AK47 is a first round talent, but there are injury concerns that will sway a person to not draft Kirilenko in the first round because, usually, you want your first rounder to have as little question as possible. So, getting Kirilenko here in the second round is a gamble, but not as big as if I took him in the first.
With a plethora of perfectly durable players still on the board, is Kirilenko worth it?

“Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em.” From Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night
Okay, here comes Round 2. This team’s off to a solid start after taking Ray Allen with its first pick. There are too many good players left to start nit-picking over certain categories. So this pick is like meeting friends for dim sum; there’s enough options for everybody, you might have to look at something before you buy it, and it’s hard to screw up the good time everyone is having. Could it be that a 30 ppg scorer is somehow still on the board? Consider me sold.
Round 2, Pick 1: Allen Iverson

Round 1, Pick 12: Ray Allen
On the plus side…
Like the players taken before him, Jesus Shuttlesworth’s game sells itself. Last year he finished 10th in scoring (25.1 ppg), 3rd in free throw percentage (90.3%), and first in three-pointers made per game (3.5). He has a nice all-around game, by being able to couple his point production with about 4 rebounds and 4 assists per game for his career. Throughout his career he has been good for just under 1.5 steals a game. It is not the sexy two-plus swipes a game that the Matrix, AK-47 or Chris Paul can deliver, but it was good enough to place him inside the top 20 in steals last year.

If anything, this pick shows how much debate can be had about the 10th pick in the first round. After the top tier guys are taken, owners that land this draft slot can either take a Risk/Reward approach, or make a slight reach on a safer selection. My decision came down to, do I think Andrei Kirilenko will play more than 60 games this year? Is Yao Ming going to be 100%? Can Allen Iverson keep up his warrior-type play, and still be there for me come playoffs?
If any of these questions were answered with “maybe,” it isn’t something I’m willing to tag a first round draft pick on. Since this is pretty much the case for all three of the aforementioned players, I’m going with talent, upside, and pure “studliness.”
Round 1, Pick 10: Chris Paul (PG-NO)

Imagine a round of golf with your friends that has been fun and competitive thus far. No one usually does anything too crazy when starting off a round. But heading towards the 8th tee, some of them are going to want to take out their driver and try to hit the ball right at the flag. So what, they say, if the hole is set up as a dog leg right, and that their short-cut is protected by trees, a valley and a lake of water. Did I mention that the green is also protected by a series of bunkers and that the wind is blowing in your faces? Let these “expert” friends of yours take this sucker shot. You are going to be like Tiger Woods and play it safer but smart. Leave the big dog to eat another day, take out your 3-wood and launch it a country mile right down the fairway.
Round 1, Pick 8, Elton Brand

Round 1, pick 7: Gilbert Arenas
On the plus side…
One must look back before moving forward, or something like that. So let’s start by regurgitating some numbers from last year but with the proper perspective. Like the monster players taken already in this draft, Gilbert Grapes can be found at the top of many statistic mountains. He finished fourth in league scoring (29.3 ppg), tied for second in three-pointers per game (2.5) and tied for third in steals per game (2.0). So between the buckets, the moneyballs and the swipes, his game brings everything a fantasy owner is looking for in a lead guard. Of course, assists are part of that mix as well, and though the uneducated may scoff at his 6.1 dime-drops per contest last year, that is still good enough to be among the top 20 in the league.

Round 1, Pick 5: Kobe Bryant, SG, Los Angeles Lakers
Have we all forgotten about the Colorado Incident yet? Isn’t it funny how people almost immediately forget scandals of celebrities, politicians, and jocks… just because there always seems to be a new one daily? Well, fantasy basketball owners never abandoned the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant as we knew that he could perform (on the court, people, on the court). And with the incident squarely behind him, Bryant went off and exploded last season (again, on the court, people, on the court).

First off, Dennis, Please tell me that you weren’t considering Dirk in the “sexy” category with LeBron James in your Marion piece. I mean, unless you dig that kind of thing…then by all means! Un-pimp Ze Auto!

Now, every once in a while, fantasy owners have prayed to the “Fantasy Gods” for good health, good games, and good luck. While this is only a mock draft, the Gods shined down on the team with the fourth pick, as Kevin Garnett, or “The Big Ticket” to some, lands in the figurative lap – making this pick to be about as much of a no-brainer as ever.
Round 1, Pick 4: Kevin Garnett
