If you think about the recent and past winners of the NBA scoring title you will realize that the winner tends to be a shooting guard. As the position states, their key role is to, surprise, shoot. Standard shooting guards contribute in points only, however, there are a few special players that can help you build a fantasy team to dominate! While some others will play integral supporting roles in that domination.

DroppingDimes’ Position Rankings: Point Guards

Though seemingly very deep, this year’s fantasy drafts could easily see four point guards go off the board within the first 12 selections. The top tier of this season’s point guard class is obviously one that not only drops dimes at will, but also dominates in another category or two (whether they be scoring buckets, swiping rocks, or draining three-balls). This breakdown should not only give an idea as to what to expect from the top point men this season, but also to show that if you aren’t lucky enough to land one of the top five, your team will be sufficiently staffed with any of the top 25 mentioned here. We’re also starting to see an emergence of a “Point Guard by Committee” on a few teams, which may hurt the value of a few guys.

Round 6, Pick 3: Troy Murphy, PF, Golden State Warriors
At first glance, it may come off as me having a thing for incredibly tall, white guys. However, that’s not exactly the case. For a squad that has the guard positions locked down, but does not exactly have the three-point gunners that I’d prefer to have with a small-ball team, what better available big man to acquire than Troy Murphy?
I took a heavy gamble on Murphy in several leagues a few years back. Yea, the one where he played less than 30 games with a bum foot. That one. However, after two straight seasons of over 70 games, I think it’s safe to say that the guy is fully healed. Oh, and have I mentioned the new head coach in Golden State? Not drawing comparisons here, but the last power forward to play full-time Nellie ball wasn’t exactly too shabby.

First, I have to say that I love Basketball-Reference.com and I use it a lot. So, when I went to the Carlos Boozer page I had to laugh when I saw the sponsor. Click here and check it out. All fun and games aside, however you may feel about Boozer (I’m talking to you, Cleveland), there’s no denying Boozer’s ability as a big man down in the box.

The loyal readers talked about this team needing a center. Instead I went off the board and picked Gerald “Crash” Wallace and Josh “J-Smoove” Smith. Does it warm my heart to hear about a 24-year-old athlete with chronic back worries? Heck, no. The importance of position eligibility is highlighted well here. Also, it sure seems tough to pick at the end of a 12-team draft this year. A champion can come from any position in the draft order, but with this mock draft, the going’s been pretty tough.

Solid. Reliable. Consistent. For a team with risky picks like Allen Iverson, Gerald Wallace and Josh Smith, it looks like it is a good time to go for some stability. I actually ran into this player at a steakhouse during my last visit to New York City. I guess that is as good a sign as any to pick a player.

Round 5, Pick 10: Raymond Felton, PG, Charlotte Bobcats
A day before training camp begins for the Charlotte Bobcats, Felton predicted that the team would make the postseason. Yes, it’s okay if you’re laughing, but for those of you who are, note that Felton says that the Bobcats are going to get that respect. That gusto and confidence is an intangible you like to hear about from a player on your fantasy basketball team, which is why I’m going with Felton here. He’s a proven winner, winning an NCAA Championship while at North Carolina and he developed very well as the season progressed, earning his fifth overall draft position amongst a great class of point guards, such as the Utah Jazz’s Deron Williams and the New Orleans Hornets’ Chris Paul, who eventually won the Rookie of the Year award. However, what if I told you that Felton wasn’t so far off from Paul, overall, when Felton finally started for the Bobcats and got regular burn on the floor?
Don’t laugh because even if Felton’s prediction for his real team doesn’t come true, if you pay attention, it can happen for your team.

Round 5, Pick 10: Manu Ginobili, SG, San Antonio Spurs
Fantasy offseasons are all about pegging breakout players from year-to-year. After a stellar campaign two seasons ago, Manu Ginobili was seen going in the second and early third rounds last season. This level of draft position left many owners disappointed after there was an unexpected drop in Ginobili’s minutes, to less than 30 a game (27.9). This decrease in minutes attributed to a decrease across the board in nearly all fantasy categories… for the regular season.
Now, as we look at how Ginobili was used in the postseason, we saw an increase to 35 minutes a game against the Mavericks, including a foul-plagued 27 minute contest. And how did he respond when given the floor time?

With this team starting the season with Elton Brand, Pau Gasol
, Lamar Odom, and Peja Stojakovic, it is time to start building the backcourt. Taking this as a real-time situation, my second round pick will be down and out until the New Year. If this happened to you while doing a messageboard or e-mail draft, hopefully you had enough rounds left to take a reasonable stab at adjusting to Pau’s unfortunately injury.
There are some young point guards with sizzle to their name heading into this year. However, I want to ensure I have a solid core I can rely on. Forced to try and get lucky with the waiver wire to make up for the loss of Gasol, I want as many players on this roster where I can just put them into the lineup and not have to think about them anymore.
