Kareem vs. ParishWith the start of the NFL season only weeks away, I’d like to give a little plug to Sarge’s new football blog, First and 10 Inches. For the basketball-centric, fantasy football is simply a way to pass the time until the new NBA season starts, right? Sarge knows his stuff be it pigskin, hoops or his good looks, so check him/it out.

Thanks to all who followed and participated our one-on-one tourney this summer. Now that the mock draft season is in full effect, the time has come to make our exit. But first we have to crown our champion. Lakers vs. Celtics should mean something again as the Big Ticket has landed in Boston.

Eat this, LBJ!

The Fig Cap: LeBron might have gone first in this draft, won the Rookie of the Year award, named to numerous All-Star teams, All-NBA teams, and achieved a commercial appeal I can only hope to reach, but DOES HE HAVE ONE OF THESE?!?!  Yeah… didn’t think so.

Okay, I’m not saying that Melo is this great fantasy basketball stud that should be considered for the first round, afterall it’s not like he’s LeBron or anything (the comparisons will NEVER end), but Melo might be better than you think.  And I start off with this preface because considering that Melo has this stigma of only being a scorer in the fantasy scheme of things (no, not that type of “scoring” you pervs), he actually brings a little more than just huge point production to a fantasy basketball team.  I suspect that Melo could fall into the third round in most drafts as the savvy fantasy basketball manager doesn’t really put a lot of credence in the points category, but the other “secondary” cats such as steals, free-throw percentage, etc.  So, how does Melo measure up?  Let’s take a jab at this and get down with the analysis… yes, the pun was fully intended.

Denver Nugget Allen Iverson driving past Mike Bibby

If you told me last summer that Allen Iverson and Kevin Garnett would be traded in the next year; I would have asked you what funny tobacco were you smoking? If you also told me that I would be able to draft Allen Iverson in the second round of my fantasy basketball league to pair up with KG; I would asked you what silly juice are you drinking with your funny tobacco?  Fast forward today, Allen Iverson is a Denver Nugget and Kevin Garnett is a Boston Celtic (Check out the Dropping Dimes’ podcast of the KG trade.). In the Dropping Dimes mock draft, I was able to team up Allen Iverson with Kevin Garnett! Hey, do you have any stock tips?

Round 2 Pick 9: Allen Iverson, PG/SG, Denver Nuggets

How Many Free Throws Did You Miss Today? While the NBA Playoffs were pretty exciting for fans in Golden State, Toronto and Cleveland, the NBA Finals weren’t exactly fun for anyone outside of select fans in San Antonio.  The four-game series was pretty much over before it started, and all a lot of Cleveland fans have to show for it are some catchy-slogan t-shirts and “Witness” posters.

The Finals MVP was taken home by newlywed Tony Parker, but the big reason why the Spurs were able to take home their fourth title was The Big Fundamental, Tim Duncan.

The 10-year veteran is a lock for 20, 12 and 2 every night.  Yes, his free throw percentage is a bit rough, but don’t forget who was drafted in the first round to help build this squad.

2.8 Tim Duncan, PF/C, San Antonio Spurs

Josh Smith aka J-SmooveJ-Smoove! Yo, we ain’t got nuthin’ to prove! J-Smoove! Yo, we ain’t got nuthin’ to prove! J-Smoove! Yo, we ain’t got nuthin’ to prove! J-Smoove! Yo, we ain’t got nuthin’ to PROOOOOOOVE.

If you are too young, or too cool to remember Fu-Schnickens, then that’s too bad. That was a pretty hype track way back when. Maybe Atlanta needs to take hold of my riff on it and adopt it as Josh Smith’s theme song.

Round 2, Pick 7: Josh Smith, SG/SF Atlanta Hawks

Bird vs. MagicIt is so sweet that KG is now a Celtic. Not that I am a fan of Boston teams, but it just gives me an excuse to post a classic Bird and Magic photo. Our finals pit a (current) Laker and a Celtic. It’s a good one, people! Dropping Dimes just turned one year old, and we couldn’t have handpicked a better match-up to close our one-on-one tourney!

Dwight Kissing Rim

The Fig Cap: “Shoot, my game is so pretty, the rim should kiss me back!”

Yes, the love continues for Orlando Magic players with ‘Shard going with the previous pick, but have no fear, Tony Battie won’t be the next selection.  And neither will Pat Garrity.  However, the Man-Child, Dwight Howard IS being chosen here and some of it does have to do with that aforementioned ‘Shard guy.  Right off the bat, I’ll say that both are getting pay-haid after signing new contracts with the Magic and it’s fitting that they are both in the money at the same time because both of their values could go hand-in-hand with how they play off of each other.

Rashard Lewis

Wow, can you believe that Rashard Lewis was selected in Round 3, pick 4 last year? A lot has changed since then - Brittney Spears is divorced, Paris Hilton was in jail, Rosie O’Donnell quit “The View,” and eventually replaced by Whoopi Goldberg. Jeez, I need to put down those gossip magazines!  (ED: No doubt, woman!)

In the fantasy basketball world, prior to the Kevin Garnett trade, one of the major headlines this offseason was the free agent signing of Rashard Lewis by the Orlando Magic. The Magic was looking for a 3-point presence to help prevent defenses from collapsing in on the man-child, Dwight Howard. In Rashard Lewis they have that 3-point presence and a lot more!

Round 2, Pick 5: Rashard Lewis, SF, Orlando Magic

Iggy Throwin' It DownWith Dwyane Wade getting selected in the first round, this team is supplied with a solid base of roto success.  While I could’ve chosen to draft a big guy, several of them were just selected with previous picks.  I could’ve chosen another guard, but Jason Kidd and Chris Paul just fell off of the board.  Thus, we’ll look at a younger guy that provides one of the better well-rounded games in the fantasy arena.

Points?  Check.
Rebounds? Check.
Assists? Check.
Steals? Check.
Field Goal Percentage? Check.
Free Throw Percentage? Check.

Alright, you’re hired.

Andre Iguodala, SG/SF, Philadelphia 76ers

Tour de NBAI had to let our first podcast marinate a little at the top of our page. It’s not every day Kevin Garnett gets traded after all! The Atlantic Division is getting crowded! Certainly in terms of fantasy impact, New Jersey no longer has the best trio in the division. Isn’t it great to have a huge trade like this to break up the summer doldrums? What else is going on in sports these days, besides the Tour de Farce?

This pick acquitted himself well last year in terms of answering the questions about his age and injury issues.

Round 2, Pick 3: Jason Kidd, PG, New Jersey Nets
