Michael Redd FLEX

The Fig Cap: “They say it’s all in the wrist, well, it doesn’t hurt to have some guns for biceps.”

Living in the New York City area, you experience many things that are dirty, smelly, bumpy, and must bring major disturbances to the Force. There aren’t too many things that go smoothly around these parts, my “game” back when I was single can be a testament to that.  Yeah, I’ve had my fair share of slaps across the face, looks of pure distaste, and mocking giggles thrown my way.  Now what does Michael Redd have to do with my former dating life?

Well, Redd’s stroke is the complete opposite of it… smooth.

Round 3, Pick 10: Michael Redd, SG/SF, Milwaukee Bucks

Jermaine O'Neal dunking over Yao

Hmm… Dywane Wade in the first… Andre Iguodala in the second… Two Center league… Time for a big-man… Let’s see who is the best big man available… Eyes get wide and pupils shrink… Oh my god Jermaine O’Neal is still available!!!

Round 3, Pick 9: Jermaine O’Neal, PF/C, Indiana Pacers

T-Mac and T-DonThe Fig Cap: Hey, Tracy.  Hear what I did?

Team Eight took the plunge and drafted Amare Stoudemire first.  Locking down one of the best big men in the game, they ended up with Rashard Lewis and his new home in the second round.  With these two likely providing about 50 combined points a night with a fair share of rebounds and threes, why not pile on some more production by taking a player that would be back in the first round of fantasy drafts if his back problems wouldn’t continue to haunt us.

Round 3, Pick 8 – Tracy McGrady, SG/SF, Houston Rockets

Gerald Wallace is a straight up PIMP!

The Fig Cap: I’m The Don “Magic” Juan of Basketball… Just Call Me Huggy G!

Does anyone maximize their athleticism more than Gerald Wallace?  After only one season at Alabama, Wallace came out early and was drafted by the Kings towards the end of the first round based solely on his jumping jack ability and very raw tools.  Seriously, it’s not like Wallace was lighting it up in college either, averaging less than 10 points and six boards a game, as well as shoot 44% from the field and 57% from the line.  Yeah, that’s pretty ugly.  However, Crash did average over a block and steal a game and he did have that athleticism.

So, why mention all of this?  Well, it seems that that raw nature of Wallace’s game is starting to smooth out, pimp-style!

Chauncey Billups smiling

Look at that smile. That’s a 60 million dollar smile! Chauncey Billups will be returning to the Detroit Pistons after signing a four-year 60 million dollar contract this past summer. Good thing for fantasy owners because Chauncey has had his best statistical years under Pistons Coach Flip Saunders. Billups is the calming floor general for the Pistons’ offense and is the yin to the volatile Rasheed Wallace’s yang. Harmony. Chant with me. Ohmmmm…now follow me through the four yoga flows for the downward dog sequence.

Ha! Can you imagine Rasheed Wallace doing yoga?!?!  Sorry, I digress. Billups will be fresh from his summer run with Team USA when the season starts, but should continue his positive contribution to fantasy teams the games count.

Round 3, Pick 5: Chauncey Billups, PG, Detroit Pistons

Baron Davis and the confetti rainWith this roster comprised only of the Matrix and ‘Melo right now, a point guard is definitely the way to go. Before the Warriors knocked off the Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs, the haters were, well, hatin’ on Baron. Some people employ the strategy of avoiding Baron because of his injury history. But then Amare Stoudemire, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Elton Brand, Yao Ming, Pau Gasol, Chris Paul, Jason Kidd, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Carlos Boozer, and of course Marcus Camby have current or past injury woes, but that did not stop us from calling their names in this mock draft blog. How much success can you achieve by playing safe ball anyways? Now don’t get sweeped up by the hype of his playoff play, but the days of ignoring this guy are over.

Round 3, Pick 3: Baron Davis, PG, Golden State Warriors

Marcus Camby Winces in Pain… what else is new?

It’s no secret that Marcus Camby gets hurt.  A lot.  Make that A LOT!  However, last season, Camby showed up, dressed in his uni, and took the floor to actually play a game and not do his best Richard Simmons impersonation and only cheer his teammates on.  Nope, Camby Man did his thing and played a very respectable (for him, amazing) 70 games.  Now the question is, can he do it again?  Can Camby actually be all that he can be, blocking and boarding like there’s no tomorrow because there just might not be?  I’m taking the risk with this pick at this point of the draft and going all in thinking that he can.  All I can say is thank goodness I don’t have any money on this bet, but I just can’t resist the talent and big-time upside!

Round 3, Pick 1: Marcus Camby, C, Denver Nuggets

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett

“You can’t handle the truth!” is a famous quote by Jack Nicolson who played Col. Nathan R. Jessep in the movie, A Few Good Men. If you rummage through the movie cast for A Few Good Men, you will see Jack Nicolson was not the only star. Let’s see.. wow.. Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, and Kevin Pollack.  It is no surprise with the star-studded cast; A Few Good Men took home the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Paul Pierce aka “The Truth” will have a star-studded cast this season as well in Boston playing with potential Future Hall of Famers, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. The Boston Celtics may not win the Larry O’Brien trophy this year but they will be a much-improved team. I am surprised that Paul Pierce slipped to the 3rd round because when the dust settles, Paul will benefit the most with new look Celtics.

Description

I figured that I would let Ray Allen and the ever-disturbing ankle picture marinate a bit before making the final pick of the second round.  After LeBron James went first overall, we’ve seen a bunch of top-notch point guards a big men fly off of the board.

Ideally, I would like to pair James with a stellar free throw shooter to help my glaring weakness that’s inherent from the sole selection of the King.  However, unless you reach for someone like Chauncey Billups or Vince Carter at this slot, you’re pretty much going to have to wait on a shooter.  Plus, if you go small, you’re stuck waiting another 22 picks before adding a big man…which could then turn ugly.

But not as ugly as the man I’m drafting with the 12th pick of the second round:

Carlos Boozer, PF/C, Utah Jazz

Denzel and Ray DO NOT DRAFT RAY ALLEN. We here at Dropping Dimes have made these type of statements before. Amare Stoudemire dropped to the very end of the second round last year in our inaugural mock draft blog. Sarge made that “gutsy” pick and obviously Amare turned out more than all right. Well, this year between his injury woes and his trade to Boston, Ray has dropped from the end of the first round in last year’s draft to almost the end of the second round this year. So is the “Velasco Amare factor” the reason that Ray slipped? Or is this a proper market correction to his fantasy value?
