Wire to Wire aims to be your waiver wire resource for all of your fantasy basketball needs. It will dive into playing time trends, injury replacements, and even an occasional category specialist – all of which can be found on a typical waiver wire within your fantasy league at any given time.
One week down, many more to go. The first week of the NBA season, though short, gives NBA fans as well as fantasy owners an idea of what coaches have in mind for their rotations. We see which players are actually going to receive some burn, while others were simply preseason mirage with a side dish of hype. As you may see from my last installment, I’d say I hit about .500, falling into the hype trap on a few – but hitting for solid contact on others. And, if I may add, I’m quite a fan of Yahoo! using entire player names within their database. Too many Jones’, if you ask me. Plus, it just looks better. Anyways, with a week down, this week’s WTW will allow us a slightly larger sample size. Of course, there are others that may have been worth the mention, but given the circumstances, I felt these were the twelve worth the word. Enjoy.

I am posting this for Ron. Sorry it is a bit late, but the season is still young, so we can still reflect on the first week of play. Ron laid down all the groundwork. As usual, it was a fun collaboration.
Ron: How ironic that in the first week of fantasy hoops, Alvin and I were pitted against each other in our H2H local fantasy league. The battle was fierce all week. Al was leading most of the week by varying degrees. Sub-par games by Lebron James (16-9-7), Tracy McGrady (8-3-4) and Baron Davis (2-2-6) on Saturday for Al’s team, opened the door slightly for a come-from-behind victory. Sad to say, I lost by one category.

The Talented Mr. Roto is a pillar of fantasy sports. They rep fantasy hoops over at NBA.com, and if you have not studied up on Matthew Berry’s Draft Day Manifesto, then you need to get cracking because you are behind in the game.
Thanks to Neil Tardy for representing TMR and taking part in our league. Neil drew the shortest straw in that he drafted last out of twelve teams. Although in this slot a team gets to make back-to-back picks, a lot of players fly off the board before your turn comes up again. Let us see what he had to say about his team!

Dropping Dimes’ Position Rankings: Centers

Similar to the NBA game, if you have top-notch options at the five spot, you have a strong chance for success in fantasy play. Gone are the days of Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwan and David Robinson dominating fantasy leagues by their extraordinary play. Here and now, the center position has to call in reinforcements from the power forward spot to boost its profile. Make sure you look out for forwards who might acquire center eligibility during the season; having that happen to one of your players might be like holding a winning lottery ticket.
The four staff members at Dropping Dimes were asked to rank the top 25 at each position. The top player received one “point,” the second player received two points, etc. Players who were not in the top 25, but thought to be able to crack the top 25 at some point in the season were given a value of 30. Players not on the radar were given a value of 40. The average ranking is listed in parentheses after the player’s team name.

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 6, Pick 8

Roy is the first rookie taken in this draft blog and there’s good reason for it - Roy can do a lot of things well. And I mean A LOT. Of course, we only have his college play to judge Roy from… oh wait, I guess we have a tiny sample of seeing what Roy can do, right? He did play in the Vegas Summer League, afterall. And what exactly did Roy do at the VSL? The exact same thing he did in college and that has to get fantasy owners excited.

With the number of point guards that have gone off of the board already, I’ve noticed that only three of them had a field goal percentage [last season] over 47%: Dwyane Wade, Steve Nash, and Jason Terry. With Terry already being on this squad, and not exactly being the biggest dime-dropper out there, I decided to ensure that along with my two big-men, I’d lock up another top-12 point guard – by my estimation. I’d even consider arguing that James could be better than Terry this season…

YO, WHAT UP, KIDD?
Jason Frederick Kidd… yeah, get past the middle name, which we all know may as well be “Is One Bad Mother On The Court.” Seriously, is there any bigger of a triple-threat in the NBA the past several seasons? This 33 year old “kid” is fourth all-time (76 games) on the Triple Double list behind Oscar Robertson (181), Magic Johnson (138), and Wilt Chamberlain (78). And, as any good fantasy player knows, getting stats spread out through several categories is always a good thing.

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 1, Pick 10

If anything, this pick shows how much debate can be had about the 10th pick in the first round. After the top tier guys are taken, owners that land this draft slot can either take a Risk/Reward approach, or make a slight reach on a safer selection. My decision came down to, do I think Andrei Kirilenko will play more than 60 games this year? Is Yao Ming going to be 100%? Can Allen Iverson keep up his warrior-type play, and still be there for me come playoffs?
If any of these questions were answered with “maybe,” it isn’t something I’m willing to tag a first round draft pick on. Since this is pretty much the case for all three of the aforementioned players, I’m going with talent, upside, and pure “studliness.”

Every drafted player strives to make a name for themselves. It takes concentrated effort and sacrifice; sometimes we see results right away. Other times a player is still trying to learn the ropes a couple of years into their career. In basketball, finding these young and rising stars just before they hit the big time is a vital edge in bringing home the fantasy glory. Welcome to the first edition of a new feature here on Dropping Dimes. In “3-2-1 Impact,” comparisons between a third year player, a second year player and a rookie are forged. Fantasy impact takes the spotlight. Hopefully by season’s end, your league mates will have all the reason to remember your name…because it will be engraved in gold on your trophy!

I was chillin the other night watching Sportscentre (yeah that’s right the Canadian version!). I wasn’t quite sure if I liked the new sets with burgundy being the main colour of choice (ESPN influence no doubt). Leaf’s signing, Baseball, CFL, Tour de France and some basketball, pinteresting how Canadian’s prioritize their sport’s news?
It is strange seeing Tour de France highlights without Lance Armstrong. What about the Tour de France drug scandal before the race started this year? I digress. Look there Andrea Bargnani playing in Summer League basketball. Hmm, not bad. He is going to struggle the 1st half of the season but he may be a fantasy bench player to look at for the 2nd half. He’ll probably average 10 points, 5 rebs with a three and a block a game. Huh? Fantasy Basketball talk in July? Don’t they say that the 1st step to coming to grips with your addiction is admitting to it? Ok, no problem I can do this. I am a Fantasy Basketball Junkie! I feel better now.
