Kevin Martin takes it to the rack!I have to admit, I was brainstorming and thinking of different ways to write an introductory paragraph about how the NBA was back, but for some reason I just couldn’t come up with anything.  I wrote out the ubiquitous Star Wars reference about Episode V, but didn’t want to appear too fanboyish the first time out.  Then Apocalypse Now hit my head with that whole “I love the smell of…,” but thought of the connotations and chucked that idea.  Then the Rodney Dangerfield classic, Back to School came to mind and how the NBA doesn’t get any respect, but didn’t want to go on a diatribe validating the League.

So, what am I saying?

I watch entirely too many movies, but I’m also way too excited about the NBA being back to think straight.  However, I’ll pop in Brad Pitt’s Meet Joe Black into the DVD player to bore me and calm my nerves enough to write this article.

(Ten minutes later; yeah, that quickly)

During the regular season, the aim of Stat’s All Folks will be to take a stock market look at the standard cumulative categories – points, assists, rebounds, three-pointers made, steals, and blocks.  I’ll be calling out the “bulls” and “bears” in each category, in order to help you assess your portfolio of players on your fantasy basketball team(s) and whether you should sell, hold, and/or diversify your assets.

Here’s the preseason installment of Stat’s All Folks.  Jagshemash, NB and A!

Dennis Velasco, our resident New York Knicks fan has passed on this guy a total of 20 times during this draft blog. Not that this is any indication of this player’s perceived fantasy value, as in the drafts that I have seen, he has often been drafted before this point in our draft blog. With his ability to score he has lots of value in a two-center league. It is just a matter of whether reality can see eye to eye with those expectations by the end of the year.

Round 7, Pick 8: Channing Frye, PF/C, New York Knicks

Chris Wilcox dunking on Tim Duncan

Well I picked this guy in the seventh round of the Dropping Dimes Experts League. so it seems only right that I call on the player again here as we all look forward to the start of the season on Halloween!

Round 7, Pick 7: Chris Wilcox, PF/C, Seattle SuperSonics

Jessica Simpson is very attractive. She is not a very good actress and if you want the odd cover song redone she can do an adequate job. Jessica is not the sharpest knife in the kitchen; remember her “Chicken of the Sea” comment on her Newlyweds reality show. Jessica Simpson is a looker and not much else.  She is a one-trick pony.

Ben Gordon is my Jessica Simpson pick. This other Ben in Chicago can fill the net with ease as his leading the Bulls in scoring last season can attest to. Any other fantasy contribution from Ben is gravy. As Jessica, Little Ben is a one-trick pony. Check out the rest of the article to see what Ben can or cannot bring to your fantasy team.

Round 7, Pick 6: Ben Gordon, PG/SG, Chicago Bulls

Hakim WarrickWire to Wire aims to be your waiver wire resource for all of your fantasy basketball needs.  It will dive into playing time trends, injury replacements, and even an occasional category specialist – all of which can be found on a typical waiver wire within your fantasy league at any given time.

For many leagues, this weekend is the one where your fantasy basketball rosters come to fruition.  Preseason activity is over, you’ve scoured the box scores, and you’re ready to roll.  You get your cheat sheets together, put on your “Witness” t-shirt, and start drafting.  OK, maybe that second part is just something that I do, but you get the drift.  It’s go time.  It’s make or break time.  It’s tell your buddies that Pau Gasol is a solid second round pick time!

I’ve taken part in several mock drafts and real drafts thus far, and let me tell you – no matter what shape or size league you’re in, there is some value to be had in that waiver wire.  Quick note: Everyone and their brothers are talking about Boston’s Rajon Rondo…so I’m choosing not too.  If you think he’ll get playing time, then go for it.  Just remember that there are about 6 legitimate point guards/shooting guards in Bean Town.  Oh, and Paul Pierce will get his time.  You’ve been forewarned.  Wait, I just talked about him…I knew that wouldn’t work.

Let’s dig in.

I am stepping in for Dennis Velasco for this pick. Dennis mentioned that there was a lonely buffet table that he had to keep company. What a gentleman. How fitting that Dennis is maintaining his round figure as this article is a tribute to the Round Mound. As a fellow D.D. writer, you will find out quickly that Dennis has a strong admiration for Charles Barkley, the Round Mound of Rebound. It could be that Dennis could relate to elements of Barkley’s career to his own life. You know struggles with weight, outspoken, great at his craft and a team player. It is unfortunate that with all the undersized Charles Barkley had accomplished in the NBA, his legacy does not include a championship.  Dennis can empathize with Barkley because Dennis’s legacy will not include the Dropping Dimes’ Expert League championship.

To continue the Round Mound theme we move on to Zach Randolph. It is quite evident reviewing highlights and pictures of Zach, that he could have avoided that extra trip to the buffet table as well.  Despite being a little round, Zach can still help your fantasy team. Check out what Zach will bring to the table.

Round 7, Pick 5: Zach Randolph, PF, Portland Trailblazers

TJ FordRound 7, Pick 4: TJ Ford, PG, Toronto Raptors

TJ Ford was one of those guys that were so under the radar last season that I was able to get him on nearly every team that I had, and for a much undervalued price due to his injuries from two seasons ago.  This season, the cat is out of the bag, and everyone is willing to “take a chance” on him.  You won’t get him for late-round value this season, but the dice is definitely worth the roll.

Plus, I already have the old Toronto Raptors point guard in Mike James, so why not draft the new one?

Samuel Dalembert
Have you ever heard of Dusty Rhodes? Dusty Rhodes, the pinch hitter extraordinaire for the 1954 New York Giants, not Dusty Rhodes, the wrestler. That year Rhodes hit .341 with 15 homers and 50 RBIs: incredible production from only 164 at-bats. The Giants, with Willie Mays as their star, won the World Series that year.

We here at Dropping Dimes will not win anything like the World Series while our star, Dennis Velasco, attends to other matters. But the least I can do is pinch-hit for the guy. He made the pick; I wil provide the words.

Round 7, Pick 3: Samuel Dalembert, C, Philadelphia 76ers

I have found a TV show to tie me over till the start of 24. I am digging this new series Heroes on NBC. It is on Mondays opposite the start of the Monday Night Football. I find myself flipping back and forth between the two channels during commercial breaks. Times like these I wish I had a picture in picture TV.  Heroes follows 10 people that discover they have special powers and their individual journeys somehow overlaps with each other. Check out the NBC.com if you are interested.

One of the characters on Heroes, Hiro Nakamura has the power to stop and travel through time. He also has the ability to teleport to different places. Can you imagine stopping time and traveling to the future?!

Wow, do you think if the Utah Jazz scouting staff had that power to look into the future that they would have chosen Chris Paul instead of Deron Williams in the 2005 NBA draft? Deron Williams was chosen 3rd overall and Chris Paul was picked next by New Orleans. Do you think Utah would like a mulligan on the pick?

Deron Williams may never reach the fantasy studliness of Chris Paul but Deron could still help your fantasy team. Let’s take a closer look at what Deron can bring to the table.

Round 7, Pick 2: Deron Williams, PG, Utah Jazz

Luke Ridnour Round 7, Pick 1: Luke Ridnour, PG, Seattle Supersonics

Two quick notes regarding this pick:

1) I had no choice but to go with another point guard in this situation.  While there are plenty still out there, I could not risk waiting another 23 selections for the draft to get back to this team to address the point guard needs.

2) I made this draft selection prior to the news about Ridnour’s thumb injury, making this pick obviously more risky in present time.
