Chris Paul Nels from Give Me The Rock is the winner of our 2nd Experts League. He threw a little diss at us in his season recap on his site, but he’s right in saying that having knowledge about the NBA and being good at the fantasy game are two different things. I find most of these industry leagues focus on the draft. I definitely put way more energy in my leagues against family and friends. Funny that Nels writes he hates Chris Paul due to something that happened in another league, but in this league, CP3 was his anchor.

Chris BoshThe Dropping Dimes team, along with some of our blogging friends, contributed to a pre-season magazine put out by Sports Eye Publications. Part of the magazine was a mock draft, which was done through e-mail. Momentum quickly swelled to make this draft a league, and I was the only one that suggested not to, voicing concerns about how much people would contribute to a league that was not one of their main ones. People wanted it to happen to the point that there was mention of finding someone else to manage my team.

Somewhat reluctantly I joined since we were already doing the draft. Plus, it was a chance to check out a league from by NBA.com and their Ultimate Fantasy Commisioner. Well, good thing I stuck around because the finals featured a match-up between myself and fellow Dime dropper, Brandon Haraway.

Alright, so this is the last week of most league’s regular seasons.  Hopefully you’ve locked yourself up a few top seeds or have at least clinched your spot in the playoffs.  If not, well here’s to hoping you do so very soon.  This may be the time to start streaming, so keep your head in the game this week if you need a big win.  Streaming can save playoff lives.

But without further adieu, here is the schedule for next week (3/17-3/23):

The Fig Cap: You still suck Tony.

I think over the last few weeks, the NBA fan has taken over me and pushed the fantasy fan aside.  I mean, if you are a true sports fan, how can you not be on the edge of your seat as we enter the last few weeks of the regular season?  At the time I’m writing this (Friday afternoon, before the games) only seven games separate #1 from #9 in the West.  And #10 isn’t out of it yet either.  This is great.

Have we seen a better race to the finish in any sport?  Baseball is always close because so few teams make it.  But could a team sitting in 9th today end up in the Finals?  It’s not out of the realm of possibility.  This year was a HUGE win for the NBA.  They stayed away from any controversy (Spygate and steroids anyone?) and pulled off a huge humanitarian effort/All-Star Weekend.  What a great year it’s been and kudos to David Stern and all his people in the league office.

Let’s jump into the schedule for the next week (3/10-3/16):

The Fig Cap: Maybe some of this hot action will get KG in the mood, er, groove.

We’re almost at the finish line and it’s time to start readying the troops for the final countdown.

How’s that for some drama?  It’s time for any last minute trades, so assess your rosters, make that deal and keep your eyes peeled to the waiver wire.  This is where championships are won, especially in H2H, where a good chunk of the best players in the league will sit out the fantasy finals.  The good news is that both conferences are set up for some tight races with a lot of jostling around with seeding, so hopefully this year more than ever we see very few guys sitting out their last few team games.  We can only hope so.

The Fig Cap: Who knew?

Well, the week is over, so hopefully everyone won their matchups.  Short weeks can either be a good pick-me-up if you need some wins, or a very bad ordeal if you have a good team that lost to an inferior one due to games played.

Let me preface this All-Star edition by saying I truly hope The Big Easy pulls this off. It’s probably going to be a big factor in whether basketball stays in New Orleans. Sadly, with the attendance figures down there, it’s looking like a negative. But I think if they can pull off a great All-Star Weekend, that may change. One can only hope.

The Fig Cap: The hometown All-Star came up short in the three-point shootout, but didn’t the rest of the week.

I dunno if anyone’s been following REAL basketball (I know, I know, we aren’t supposed to care about that) but maybe you should take a look at the standings.  Some weird stuff is going on.  Washington a four seed?  What?  Portland a three seed?  Utah and Houston out of the playoffs?  I know it’s early, but wow.  Nobody called that in September and October.  But good for those up and coming teams (although I’m not so sure you can call the Wizards that).

Anyways, I’m done ranting, here’s the slate of games for next week: (1/14-1/20)

The Fig Cap: How old are you anyway?

So, yeah, this is the debut of this column.  I hope everyone likes it, as I’m filling in for Dennis Velasco and his “Fantasy Jump-Off,” because he has decided to take a leave of absence of sorts from the fantasy basketball world for bigger and better things.  Best of luck to Dennis, and a big thanks from me and anyone who has ever worked with the guy or read his stuff and used it.

The Fig Cap: Now that is a sweet ‘do.
