Yi Jianlian, Milwaukee Bucks, We Hardly Knew Ya

Buh-Bye MilwaukeeWhat can I say?  I’m itching to start dropping more and more science, so deal with this quick piece - I promise we’ll get rolling here soon!

ANYWAYS - Reports circulated today that Milwaukee Bucks draft pick, and sixth overall selection Yi Jianlian will not be coming to Milwaukee this season.  Not surprising news by any means given that Jianlian hasn’t contacted any reps of the Bucks since draft night.  Within the report, the Chinese representatives said the following:

“This is not—as media reports have said—because Milwaukee, as a city with very few Chinese people, is not good for Yi’s commercial development,” Chen said. “Rather we want to find a team suitable for Yi’s growth. That’s the root of the problem”

Well, even with this news being denied by Milwaukee, there will undoubtedly be some fantasy fallout.

First thing to consider is the fact that Jianlian will be traded before the Bucks allow him to simply sit out a season and head in to next season’s draft - ultimately costing them a lottery selection.  There are several teams that are interested in the Chinese big man, so finding a partner will not be the difficult part.  That, in fact, will be Bucks brass swollowing their pride and moving their high-potential import.

Depending on who/what Milwaukee gets in return, this will obviously mean good things for current frontcourt guys Charlie Villanueva and Andrew Bogut.  I had some pretty high expectations for Charlie V last season, and despite putting up some decent numbers, he failed to log in enough games to even matter in the deepest of leagues.  Bogut was drafted last season as a second center in most formats, but failed to improve off of his rookie season.  Needless to say, both players could use a second crack at proving to their front office that they need not draft any more seven-footers from overseas.  For more thoughts on this, I recommend checking out Nels’ drop over at GMTR.

One situation with the Bucks that I won’t be going near is the Bobby Simmons/Desmond Mason/David Noel logjam at the “four.”  My advice is to let someone else bite on it and drift through the waiver wire as frequently as last season - where we were able to find solid options like Charlie Bell and the since-moved-on forward Reuben Patterson

Larry?Obviously, this isn’t the last of the Jianlian news.  You never know with David Stern or the Bucks GM Larry Harris.  I wouldn’t count out his disappearance onto a Chinese rig for the next two years, only to come back with a beard and whip-lashings.

Update: Now reports out of China are also saying that this isn’t true.  See, I told you it wouldn’t be the last of the news.
