Rumors: Nuggets to Swap Iverson for Billups?
The Boston Globe is reporting that the Denver Nuggets are working on a deal that would send Allen Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess. With Billups making about half as much as Iverson, McDyess (now relegated to the bench) is obviously a piece of the trade puzzle to make the salaries match.
The Nuggets are clearly in salary dumping mode, but what does the deal possibly mean for fantasy owners?
Value Up:
Carmelo Anthony: Billups would most defnitely not take as many shots as someone like Iverson does. Anthony would almost certainly be the first scoring option from here out.
J.R. Smith: Iverson has been suiting up at shooting guard, with Anthony Carter playing the point. If Billups comes to town, Smith could see even more minutes at the “two” for Denver, and could see even more shots.
Chauncey Billups: Without Rodney Stucky looming in the shadows, Billups now plays for a team that focuses more on offense. More offense is a good thing when it comes to fantasy value.
Amir Johnson/Jason Maxiell: No more McDyess means that these two should see even more playing time. Plenty more boards and blocks for the box score.
Value Down:
Anthony Carter: As stated above, this is a blow to Carter’s playing time. Billups is clearly better than Carter, and will see the bulk of the minutes at the point for Denver.
Allen Iverson: Albeit not a huge decline, Detroit’s rotations may wind up hurting Iverson’s value in the end. He’ll obviously get burn in close games, but he also has plenty of talent with whom to share shots. Of course, if he runs the point for The D, he may see an increase in steals and assists to go along with a possible decrease in scoring - so not all is lost.
Richard Hamilton: A guy know mostly for just scoring is about to see considerably fewer shots. This move also opens up more room for the possible Stucky/Iverson backcourts…also not good for Rip.
If McDyess figures into Denver’s plans, this may also hurt Nene Hilario and Kenyon Martin. However, I’ll believe that when I see it. Also something to consider would be the likelihood of a missed game for all parties.
Of course, if this deal doesn’t go through, then we can forget entirely about the above.
