Dropping Dimes Turns Two!
Happy birthday to us! On behalf of everyone here, thank you to our longtime readers for your continued support. If you have just recently discovered us, thank you for taking the time to check us out.
Our two on two tourney is just about to wrap up, and our mock draft blog will launch shortly. In two years we have made 548 entries. Sarge deserves the title of “Mr. Dropping Dime” as he has kept this party going with 175 entries. I am next with 132, which just edges our original editor-in-chief, Dennis Velasco who has posted 127 times. Our fourth original member, Ron Chow, has posted 61 times. Brandon Haraway has 41 posts to his name. Rounding out our archives are Matt Satten and Zack Francis who total 12 posts between the two of them.
Today marks our two year anniversary, so it gives us a chance to look back at our most popular entries.
1. Do Not Draft Amare Stoudemire by Dennis Velasco
It was August 6, 2006. Amare was recovering from significant injury and major surgery. We know how it all worked out for Amare two years later; he has played his way back into a top five fantasy pick. Back then though, our first editor-in-chief echoed a sentiment that was shared by many, that counting on Amare was risky business. We can all laugh at this post and its proclamation now, although perhaps D cries just a little.
2. My PFS Experts League Team by Dennis Velasco
Fantasy sportsters love mock drafts. D recapped his draft with a bunch of experts. The commentary on his picks was not that favorable, but I believe D went on to win this league.
3. Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 1, Pick 7 by Alvin Lai
Gilbert Arenas aka Agent Zero was a bargain as the seventh pick in the 2006-07 season. Injuries derailed him last year, which might explain why this particular injury is high on our list, as fantasy GMs searched the earth for info on Arenas. He stands to be a high risk, high reward type of player for 2008-09.
4. Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 1, Pick 12 by Alvin Lai
Ray Allen was the pick here. Future events likely led to more hits on this entry, as Jesus Shuttlesworth was traded to Boston after the 2006-07 season and of course, won a title with Celtics. Two years later, he no longer earns a first round pick and will likely be there for you in the fourth round or later.
5. Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 4, Pick 3 by Scott Sargent
Sarge’s most popular post in Dropping Dimes history has Mehmet Okur as its subject. The Okur fan club must have linked to this post like crazy!
6. Dropping Dimes One-on-One Tourney: Round 1, Games 1 and 2 by Alvin Lai
This was my way of having some basketball fun during the off-season. It was fun finding pictures of one-on-one battles to go along with the text, whether it was Michael vs. Magic, Bruce Lee vs. Kareem or Optimus Prime vs. Megatron. These days, Federer vs. Nadal probably would have been used. Kobe Bryant was the eventual champion and this year things morphed into a two-on-two tourney. Next year? We’ll see.
7. Dropping Dimes on the Daily: January 5, 2007 by Dennis Velasco
“Dropping Dimes on the Daily” was a feature that was also posted on ElevationMag.com and recapped the previous night’s action. I used it as an excuse to drop some lyrical rhymes. Credit to D, as this idea was another one of his that we ran with. More daily content is something we strive for in 2008-09.
8. Stat’s All Folks: “Manute Bol is One Tall Guy” by Dennis Velasco
“Stat’s All Folks” was D’s main weekly feature in the early days. It was simultaneously posted on Sports Illustrated. Every week D listed players he was bullish and bearish on in the various categories.
9. Dropping Dimes Mock Draft Blog 2007: Round 1, Pick 2 by Dennis Velasco
D’s piece on Kobe was the most viewed entry of the 2007 mock draft. D was a prophet on this one, as Kobe ended up with the MVP award…not that taking Kobe with the second pick was that difficult, but it shows that sometimes fantasy sporting success lies in minimizing risk.
10. Injury Lowdown - Elton Brand Is Out! by Ron Chow
Brand Name has been a premium fantasy basketball product over the years, so of course him ending up with an Achilles’ injury last year was major news. Ron used to cover the injury beat for us, and will be making a comeback of sorts when he helps out with our 2008 mock draft blog.
11. Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 4, Pick 2 by Dennis Velasco
The draft blog was gaining huge momentum at this point. Early fourth round entries by Sarge, D and myself all made this all-time list. Kirk Hinrich was the pick here.
13. Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 4, Pick 1 by Alvin Lai
Josh Smith was taken with the 37th pick overall two years ago. I feel like the oracle on this one, as J-Smoove gets first round consideration these days.
14. Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 1, Pick 1 by Ron Chow
For the second year in a row, LBJ was the top pick in our draft blog. We have consistently hailed to the king even as the haters continue to dig at his free throw percentage and his turnovers. Will he be #1 when we kick off our 2008 draft? Tune in and find out.
15. Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007 : Round 2, Pick 11 - Ray Allen by Alvin Lai
People like to gross themselves out, I guess. This draft entry had a supposed picture of Allen’s ankle attached.
16. The Missing Details of our Draft Blogby Dennis Velasco
As launched our pick by pick mock draft blog, which at the time was the only one of its kind as far as we knew, D took the time to lay out what it was we were actually doing. Perhaps it was the picture of David Stern that made this entry so popular and not the draft itself.
17. Fantasy Impact: Allen Iverson Trade by Dennis Velasco
AI getting traded to the Denver Nuggets was major news right before the Christmas season of 2006. D broke down the fantasy considerations in this post. Two years later, the Answer is getting first round love in the summer mock drafts again.
18. Just Because: The Official Steve Novak Watch by Scott Sargent
Only Sarge has the talent to make a post on Steve Novak crack this list. Or maybe Novak has a large extended family.
19. Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007 Round 3, Pick 1 - Paul Pierce by Ron Chow
The big question leading into the 2007-08 season was how the fantasy pie in Boston was going to be divided up. Hence, Ron and his feature on The Truth ended up with a lot of hits.
20. Dropping Dimes Staff Rankings: Week 17 by Brandon Haraway
Ah…the rankings. When Brandon joined our squad, we gave him the thankless task of compiling and posting the rankings every week. He did a great job. Rankings are tough because everyone is a critic. We still get comments from people who have no idea the rankings are for fantasy purposes. For example, four games of Chauncey Billups is probably better than three games from Deron Williams. Again, nice job all year, B.
The trip down memory lane was nice and all, but we here at Dropping Dimes are looking to make the upcoming season our best yet. Thank you again for your support!
Peace.
