Dropping Dimes on the Daily – December 4, 2007

Jared Dudley

Cause I totally blew it with not getting up a Daily yesterday, I’m going extra big with tonight’s version. Please accept this humble offering with my sincere apologies and a pledge to do better next time. I suddenly feel like Tony Kornheiser. Um, yeah.

Anyway, a new name in fantasyland you’ll read about after the jump is this dude on the right, Jared Dudley. He now starts for Charlotte. He’s fun to watch. More importantly, his StatTracker line lighting up is fun to watch as well. Yeah, I know, but that’s what gets me excited these days.

The Fig Cap: I don’t have to wear warm-ups at the tip anymore!

With Chris Bosh, T.J. Ford and Andrea Bargnani out of the lineup due to injury, the Raptors reserves were ready to contribute. Jose Calderon wasted no time showing why he’s a stud-in-waiting and probably the best backup PG in the whole damn Association. Commanding the game from the get go, Calderon, who averages 11 apg when he starts, finished with 12 points, 9 dimes, 7 boards and 3 steals in a game that was never close. Continue to enjoy the obscene production in Ford’s absence.

Carlos Delfino – another foreigner from the international conglomerate that is the Toronto Raptors – exploded for 17 points, 4 3PM, 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block in 33 minutes off the bench. He has been producing well in limited minutes all season, so it’s nice to see it can be maintained for an extended period. The Argentinean is in the midst of a nice five-game stretch and warrants a look in deep leagues while Barganani mends.

The Raptors weren’t the only team pimping their talented backups last night. The opposing Bobcats showcased the 22nd overall pick in Jared Dudley when Sam Vincent inserted him into the starting lineup for the completely ineffective Primoz Brezec. With his unmatched tenacity, Dudley delivered the goods with a double-dip of 16 points and 10 boards with 3 steals for good measure. Removing Brezec from the starting lineup was long overdue, but the result was still a blowout loss to a team missing its three best players, so the change is not chiseled in stone. Still Dudley looks like a good add with his SF/PF eligibility in Yahoo! leagues and his 37 minutes played. As much as Vincent doesn’t want to start Okafor at center and risk early foul trouble, he needs to start winning ballgames since it’s been a long six games from the last victory. This move forces him to have his best players on the floor with Gerald Wallace shifting to PF – a position he has excelled at fantasy-wise each of the past two years. Perhaps they will start winning ballgames now. If so, Dudley’s outlook is even better.

Refusing to settle for jumpers this time, Josh Smith finally had a strong shooting night as he attacked the rim against the Sixers. Shooting just 37.4 percent on the season, Smith registered his fist 20-point game since November 17 – a span of eight games. Per the norm, he filled the rest of the stat line with 7 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 4 blocks and 1 3PM.

Zaza Pachulia exited the game just 28 seconds in after getting a ’bow in the nose from the Haitian Sensation. Al Horford got even more run than usual and demonstrated why he’s the most efficient rookie in fantasyland. Sorry KD. This second generation superstar had 12 points on 67 percent shooting and double-dipped with 13 boards. As for the Sixers, Andre Iguodala seemed too comfortable regressing to his underachieving ways after he appeared to have turned the corner recently. Or maybe Josh Smith is a pretty dang good defender. Regardless, you (and by you, I mean me) were expecting more from him against Atlanta than 11 points, 8 boards, 5 dimes and 2 steals. C’mon! On a side note, Mo Cheeks continues to trust Jason Smith with big minutes in crunch time of close games. While he makes mistakes, he does have great range on his jump shots and is an above-average athletic big man. Center eligibility could lie in his future if Dalembert ever goes down for an extended period of time.

On the heels of his two worst games of the season, Brandon Roy couldn’t have been happier to see the Memphis Grizzlies and their fun and gun style. Roy trampolined back to loftier heights with 26 points, 9 boards and 7 dimes in the 1-point victory. Roy wasn’t the story of the game though, nor was LaMarcus Aldridge with his 23 points. No, the protagonist of tonight’s epic battle was Travis Outlaw for he took over the fourth quarter and sealed the Grizz’s fate with a running bank shot as the buzzer blared. After impressing in three of the last four games now, he’s going to be a popular pickup with real “triple-single” (one three, one steal and one block) potential. His line tonight was 21 points, 7 boards, 3 threes and 2 blocks. If there is going to be a lineup shakeup in Portland at some point soon, you’ll see Outlaw supplant Martell Webster in the starting five.

If it weren’t for Outlaw, Rudy Gay would have been the hero of the night after his amazing swooping offensive rebound and putback layup – all in one motion – gave the Grizzlies the one-point lead with two seconds to go. Luckily, this is fantasy basketball and his line tonight was a winner: 30 points on 12-16 shooting, 3-4 3PM, 3-3 FT, 8 rebounds, 3 dimes, 1 steal and 1 block. Mike Miller matched him with 30 large, but double his downtown output, draining 6-11 triples on the night. Pau Gasol established a new season-high in rebounds with 15, adding 14 points, 4 dimes, 2 blocks and 1 steal in the process.

Utah was probably happy to have Carlos Boozer back in their lineup, but I am absolutely positive that his fantasy owner was more pumped up than Barry Bonds to see those bushy eyebrows in uniform. This Jazzman didn’t miss a beat as he orchestrated a duet with tango partner Deron Williams as each went for 24 and 15, rebounds for Boozer and assists for Williams, respectively. The big man also managed 4 steals. Memo Okur also eased flawlessly back into the starting five and dropped a team high 25 points on 10-14 FG and 4-5 3PM.

Mavs All-Star swingman Josh Howard made like a teenage schoolgirl by flirting with a triple-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds only to prove a tease with just 6 six assists. At least the strong percentages, 2 steals and 1 3PM provided a pleasant goodnight kiss. Dirk added 25 points but did little else. Devin Harris was virtually non-existent. The most noteworthy news item is Erick Dampier stood tall in his best game since returning from injury. The 7-footer grabbed 10 boards and rejected 6 shots while sinking his only attempt. If you’re hurting for a center, and who isn’t these days, Damp has proven that he has some value.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade is struggling at the charity stripe and last night was no different. Flash connected on only half a dozen makes on a full dozen attempts. Not good. Everything else, however, was very niiice. He posted 26 points, 4 boards, 10 dimes, 5 steals and 2 blocks. He’s only going to get better as he gets healthier and the Heat finally steady their rotation.
