Dropping Dimes Mock Draft 2007: Round 4 Pick 3 - Brandon Roy

Brandon Roy posting up Deron WilliamsThe Fig Cap: You were taken 12 picks before me? And you played for Team USA first? Come here and taste some pain!

Nothing against Deron, but we like this guy. It sure got old fast but we were one of the first pronouncing “Roy for ROY” last year. This year? Look out.

Round 4, Pick 3: Brandon Roy, PG/SG, Portland Trail Blazers

This man’s stat-line already speaks for itself.

57 GP, 35:17 Min, 45.5 FG%, 83.8 FT%, 1.0 3pg, 16.8 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.2 spg, 0.2 bpg, 2.0 topg

The 25 missed games last year was the worst part of his season. Certainly it is good news that there have not been any whispers about lingering issues regarding Roy’s health. Already capable of playing starter minutes, his slick percentages (he led the Blazers with a 37.7% from three-point land) as a rookie are the best proof that we can believe the hype.

You must already know that the Blazers are an intriguing fantasy team this year. How high will Greg Oden fly in his first year in the league (and does he out-shine Kevin Durant or is it Sam Bowie/Michael Jordan all over again)? LaMarcus Aldridge looks ready to take a flying leap forward as well. Much to some Knick fans’ chagrin, Zach Randolph was shipped out of town. At point guard, Steve Blake has been brought in, and maybe you think he will be the calming veteran influence on an up and coming team. Jarrett Jack and Sergio Rodriguez are also in the mix to start at the one. Jack had a decent year as he played the bulk of the minutes running the point for the Blazers last season, averaging 5.3 dimes a game. Regardless of who wins the training camp battle, Roy is sure to handle the ball a ton for Portland this year. As the inside/outside scoring threat on the team, look for him to improve on his shooting percentage, while filling up the basket to the tune of at least 18-20 ppg. After all, as a rookie he was able to raise his scoring average every single month, finishing with a sweet 21.2 per game in April. Hopefully this year he does not close out the year with a whimper due to injury.

Around here at Dropping Dimes, we like Roy almost as much as we have man-love for Chris Paul, and that’s saying something. Check out what we said about Roy last year when we compared him to being the cole slaw to the meat of his fantasy team. This team now sports Jason Kidd and Roy occupying the point guard eligible positions. As Russell Peters might say, some other fantasy team’s gonna get hurt real bad.

Roy for ROY: Rock of the Year.

2.3 Jason Kidd, PG, New Jersey Nets
3.10 Michael Redd, SG, Milwaukee Bucks

Comments:

Yes, that was an inside joke of sorts. Sarge seems to like the guy, though. He’s picked him in every mock I’ve seen him do this year.

I believe the line is actually “...get a hurt real bad.” It sounds more true to Peters’ roots this way…
