The Fig Cap: Boom Dizzle My P-Nizzle!

Anyone remember Special Ed?  No, not as in classes, but as in the rapper from the late 80’s/early 90’s.  “I Got It Made,” “I’m The Magnificent,” “Come On, Let’s Move It.”  Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?  Seriously, whenever I see Martin with his fresh cut fade, I always think of Special Ed.  To paraphrase Mars Blackmon, “It’s gotta be the cut.”  Anyway, the aforementioned three songs I mentioned all apply to Martin, appropriately enough.  He’s certainly got it made now after signing a five-year deal with the Sacramento Kings.  Martin has played magnificently when given the playing time (sorry, got to pop my collar right now knowing I called Martin’s crazy game when Peja Stojakovic was hurt a couple of seasons ago; although I’m still waiting for Francisco Garcia to get his well-deserved burn) as last season proved.  And now with his 2006-07 performance, he moves it (as in his draft stock) up all the way to the fourth round of this mock draft. 

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Special Kev.

Round 4, Pick 1: Kevin Martin, SG, Sacramento Kings

Martin was drafted from a North Carolina school, but it wasn’t in Durham or Chapel Hill.  Nope, we’re talking Cullowhee, where Western Carolina University has its campus.  Martin was doing his thing at WCU and that was scoring from all over the court by attacking the rack like it owed him money (“Where my money at, RIM!”) and raining jumpers from the perimeter.  The man was just a straight up scorer!  And that ability to get the ball in the basket has continued.  Here is Martin’s career statistics:

2004-05: 45 G; 10:05 Min; 38.5 FG%; 0.1 3PTM; 65.5 FT%; 1.3 RPG; 0.5 APG; 0.5 TO; 0.4 SPG; 0.1 BPG; 2.9 PPG
2005-06: 72 G; 26:36 Min; 48.0 FG%; 0.9 3PTM; 84.7 FT%; 3.6 RPG; 1.4 APG; 1.1 TO; 0.8 SPG; 0.1 BPG; 10.8 PPG

It’s easy to see the scoring average trending upwards from the get-go, however, it IS a small sample size!  A small sample size that gives you nothing but indications that Martin will continue to be a prolific scorer again this season, thanks to his very good accuracy from the floor, hitting about 50% from the field, his excellent free throw percentage and triples made, you have to take these indicators as nothing but good news for the future.

As far as anything else, you have to be impressed with the board numbers and the steals are solid.  However, that’s about it for Martin.  His blocks are basically like a feel-good Lindsey Lohan story nowadays, which is non-existent and the dimes dropped you don’t really expect much from scorers from the two position.  They’re called SHOOTING guards for a reason, people!  You want them to score and contribute to your points, treys, and percentage categories.  That’s a good thing.

In any case, obviously, Elton Brand will be out for a while so I won’t talk much about that stroke of (bad) luck for this hypothetical team.  Chris Paul will fill in where Martin won’t and that will mainly be in the assists category.  CP3 at the one, Special Kev at the two definitely makes for a strong backcourt.  Add the points and tons of steals from Caron Butler and it seems we only need to address rejections that leave a backward Spalding on opposing offensive players’ foreheads in future rounds.
