Weekend Reading: The Damned, Apes, Simpsons and Tex Avery
Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, power outages. It's been a wild couple of climate change-enhanced weeks. Let's play catch-up across the internets:
Cullen Bunn is having a career year and let’s hope it’s the first of many. The creator of The Sixth Gun got his Oni Press series, The Damned, picked up by Showtime for a series. He’s already gotten The Sixth Gun optioned to SyFy for a series. If they both make it to air, Bunn will have two more shows on the air than DC Comics.
Apes: Rich Handley reviews the fourth issue of Darryl Gregory and Carlos Magno’s Planet Of The Apes, from Boom! “BOOM!’s Apes run stands on a pinnacle, one sure to end badly for humanity.” But all good for readers and fans.
Republicans: My pal Doug Molitor from Funny Or Die looks at 12 Republican super-heroes. My favorite? The Human Torturer!
Jack: Man, that’s a lot of nice Jack Davis work that Michael Sporn posted. I really love those western covers, too.
Tex: Jerry Beck at Cartoon Brew remembers the great animation director Tex Avery.
Galaxis: Over at Weimar World Service, writer-editor John Zipperer is teasing about the second issue of his new sci-fi mag.
Punisher: Evan Lewis at Davy Crockett’s Almanack remembers The Punisher: Welcome Back Frank by Garth Ennis: “Only a comic book, but still (and this is the straight skinny from me to you,)…it kicks ass.”
Buddy: My pal Buddy Scalera gets himself interviewed at The Morton Report to talk about his new book: Colossal Collection of Action Poses.
Griff: Dennis Hartley at Digby’s Hullabaloo has seen a low-budget “super-hero” movie I’d never heard of: Griff the Invisible. It’s the story of a socially awkward office clerk who dresses up as a super-hero at night.
Simpsons: Maybe this is also elsewhere, but I love this Rob Tornoe cartoon that reimagines the Republican Presidential front runners as Simpsons characters.
Australia: Ricky Sprague at Project Child Murdering Robot has a take on Robert Crumb’s recently cancelled trip to the land down under.
Byrne: You know who likes the revived John Byrne’s Next Men? Todd Klein, that’s who.
MAD: Yow! That’s a lot of MAD paperbacks!
Slave Leia: Writer Lance Mannion takes the opposing view: “Princess Leia as slave girl never did it for me.” At least he posted a picture.
And finally, the gang at Red Dwarf are getting new costumes for their upcoming new series.
That’s it for now! Use your internets responsibly!
