Weekend Reading: Dark Horse, Tokyopop, Borders, Glut & Apes

FrankensteinSo, not a great week for comic book publishers as Tokyopop finally called it quits. If you have a project over there, it's a good time to get a lawyer to look over your contract and see about rights reversion when the publisher goes away without declaring bankruptcy (yet) or getting sold.

Then Dark Horse laid off a bunch of employees, many of them beloved and had been there a long time.

But at least the US Government is stepping in to try to stop Borders executives from looting the stores they’ve already ruined.

Rise: I love the way the new Planet of the Apes comic book from Boom! is looking. The Scoop has a sneak preview of the first issue, on sale April 27.

Victor: Here’s a great interview with writer Don Glut that’s mostly about Frankensten. “Why don't I do a series of Frankenstein novels that would be based on the movies and all of these other things? In each one I would bring in some other character from fiction or whatever. I would create this whole Frankenstein universe.”

Captions: Like many of us, I share a dream with Roger Ebert: to be a finalist in The New Yorker’s cartoon caption contest.

Chicks: Moonstone’s got a great-looking book out this week, Chicks In Capes. It’s “a fun and thought-provoking collection of all new prose short stories by a wide range of female authors”: Nancy Holder, Debbie Viguie, Jennifer Fallon, Trina Robbins, Elaine Lee (Starstruck) and more are all in there. All Pulp has a look.

Stores: South Florida comic book stores fight for their right to party, I mean survive. "But now people go, 'Hmm, I have to buy gas.' I have had people stand here and say 'comics, gas, comics, gas,'" said Lightfoot, whose store has seen a 70 to 80 percent drop in sales since 2008. He opened the store 27 years ago.”

Beau: Mr. Beau Smith admires a great many things. Sadly, my check appears not to have cleared.

Omnibus: Bruce Grossman at Bookgasm looks at a bunch of trade paperback collections, including Mighty Sampson. “If they ever make this into movie, it better be over-the-top, in 3-D and maybe even a musical.”

Snot: Cartoonist Lew Stringer previews the Toxic Wicked Holiday Special, the British comic that features Mr. Nostril.

Dang: Adam at Comics Make No Sense is shutting down the blog. It’s too bad, because he posted a lot of really funny and strange stuff. I wish him the best of luck in whatever his next thing is!

Writering: Want to know what it’s like to try to get a job on the staff of a TV series? My friend Daniel Thomsen walks you through it at screenwriter John August’s blog.

Boo: Richard Matheson, he of so many great television scripts (Twilight Zone), books (I Am Legend) and movies (Somewhere In Time), is still at it. He’s got a new book out and Slade Grayson at Bookgasm says I need to put it on my list of books to get.

And finally, if you’re one of those folks who believe that public libraries can be a longterm market for comic books and graphic novels, Mike Shatzkin has an alternative view.

Now use your internets responsibly!
