The Breast of Times - Women In Comics
Today’s topic is on the growth of breasts is comic books. We are only discussing American comics because anyone who reads Japanese anime or hentai knows that American breasts cannot touch Asian ones. So, we will stick to the good ol’ USA.
Studying the history of American comics one can notice that women in comics were usually portrayed as well-endowed. In fact, a study which, unfortunately I cannot document at the moment, discovered that women in comics during the 1940s and 1950s were usually a cup size larger than American women at that time. How they determined cup size in comics I have no idea, but they did quote figures from the Playtex Corporation which, back then, was the dominant producers of women’s unmentionables. But any discussion of women’s attributes was forbidden by the Comics Code so all we did was look.
Now we are in the 21st century. Women are a cup size larger than 50 years ago and, luckily, the comic industry has kept pace. Here, for example, we can cite Power Girl or the new Loki as prime examples. Real prime. But breasts are no longer a forbidden topic. A few years ago, Misty Knight, star of Heroes for Hire and girlfriend of Daniel Rand (Iron Fist) was sparring her sensei in a warehouse when he used a deceitful move to whack her. When she complained, her sensei informed her that in a fight her opponents were unlikely to be honorable fighters. She then proceeded to unzip her top. When her sensei gaped at her she whacked him back.
In an early Superman/Batman story line we had the appearance of the new Toyman, the teenage son of Superman’s old foe. Our heroes needed him to build some device or another but he would have nothing to do with these old-timers. So Bats enlisted Power Girl. When she inquired why they thought he would help her when they wouldn’t help the icons, Supes and Bats just stared at her chest. Power Girl glanced down and just said “oh.”
In Action Comics 868 we hit a “great moment in comic history” when Supergirl having a confrontation with Cat Grant, stares at her chest and utters the immortal words: ” My x-ray vision is picking up some weird plastics in your…” Ah, we love comics in the 21st century.
In a later posting we will discuss how snidely sexual mainstream books have become.
