A pretty good issue here.  Part three of the “Elegy” story arc as Kate Kane the Batwoman continues her fight against the Religion of Crime (ROC).  In our last issue we saw the leader of the ROC, Alice, and her followers stand ready to take out Batwoman and her father, but a group of monsters show up.  The monsters are there to help Batwoman and they attack the ROC.  Their leader is a werewolf and he helps Kate and her dad get to safety.  The werewolf changes back to human form and tells Kate’s dad that they are the true believers.  I’m assuming these people were apart of the ROC before Alice took over.  We learn that the werewolf is man named Abbot who was the “bodyman” for the last High Madame Whisper A’Daire.

What I enjoy most about the character of Kate Kane is not her activities as Batwoman, but more so the person behind the mask.  Writer Greg Rucka writes a great scene with Kate and her father and follows it up with a dinner party they attend where Kate meets up with Maggie Sawyer.  Sawyer was first introduced in the pages of Superman back in the 80s, but she has since been “transferred” to Gotham City and the Batman universe.  Will we see a romance develop here?

Kate shows up to the party dressed in a tuxedo.  It seems she does things like this more to anger her stepmother, who is also at the party, than it is her being a lesbian and dressing more masculine.  Maggie is also there in tuxedo and the two end up dancing together.  DC can develop a nice love triangle with Kate, Maggie, and Renee as we see in this issue that Kate still has feelings for her.

The monsters now in human form also arrive at the party and Abbot cuts in to talk with Kate.  Abbott tells Kate, Alice’s plans are not about her, but more about the destruction of Gotham City.  Unfortunately, Alice wants to bring Batwoman along for the ride as she finds a way to steal Kate’s father away from the party and holds him captive.  We end there.

The Question’s story continues as well as we see Renee has been captured by men involved in the kidnapping ring.  They drug her, dump her in the truck of a car, and push it off into the river.  She escapes and fights the man responsible.  Before Renee can get any answers from the guy, he’s shot and killed by someone else.  To be continued.

The Question story has no interest for me, but I do like Batwoman.  It’s not the best thing out there right now, but Greg Rucka is doing a fine job developing this character.  I’d like to see him get the whole book so he can give Kate some more storytime.  I don’t like Alice or the ROC and would like to see some traditional Batman villains take on Batwoman.

Good issue and I’ll stick with Detective Comics for now.
