DC Comics Review: Batman #685

Another solid issue by Paul Dini.  Dini was one of the masterminds behind “Batman: The Animated Series”.  When it was announced that he was going to write for Batman, I was thrilled.  Although his run has not lived up to my expectations, his run has still been quite good.  This issue continues the “Faces of Evil” storyline that began in “Detective Comics”.

If you read part one of this story and the “Heart of Hush” story before that, you know that Tommy Elliot aka Hush has had his face surgically altered to look like Bruce Wayne.  Catwoman has sworn revenge over the incident in where Hush stole her heart - literally.  She gets revenge by stealing all of the Elliot fortune and leaving Tommy penniless.

Because he looks like Bruce Wayne and Bruce is missing, Hush takes advantage and uses this to score some cash - unfortunately for him he wasn’t expecting to meet up with Catwoman again.

Spoilers….......

In this issue Catwoman punishes Hush some more, but in the end she needs him to escape the situation she’s currently in with a gang of poachers stealing rare animals. Hush agrees to become a decoy for her so she can escape, but swears revenge. Some men guide Tommy in his escape, but he discovers that these men are Nightwing and Robin in disguise.

In the end, because Hush looks like Bruce Wayne and putting Hush in Arkham would compromise Bruce’s identity as Batman, Nightwing and Robin decide to house Hush in their own prison.  This should be an interesting storyline - depending how long DC goes with it.  Maybe he escapes during the “Battle for the Cowl”? I would actually like to see this go on for a while.  Batman and Hush can have some Clarice Starling/Hannibal Lecter moments.

As I mentioned in my blog about part one of this storyline, this whole face changing thing is like a soap opera plot and the keeping of Hush in his own personal prison has been done in soap operas before too.  I wonder if Paul Dini watches soaps?  Anyway, I don’t mind it and I’m looking forward to more Batman stories by Mr. Dini in the coming year.
