Comic Book Jobs: A Chelsea Gallery (NYC)
Do you like wall full of art, cocktails at 6:00 PM, dressing up and being all snobby and critical? Can you convince others that what's on that wall would look absolutely fabulous behind the bar in their trendy loft? Does a gallery opening fill you with as much excitement as others get from dressing up as a stormtrooper?
Then there is a job waiting for you!
There’s an “up-and-coming Chelsea gallery” that exhibits “a genre of work influenced by illustration, comic books, graffiti, street art and pop culture imagery” and they’re looking for an experienced Sales Director.
This particular gallery “represents a mix of emerging and mid-career level artists with an emphasis on cultivating new talent and creating an environment where artists can further develop their work.”
For the Sales Director job, they obviously want someone who “will share a passion for our art and artists, and also possess a good general knowledge of contemporary and emerging art.” You need to be “highly self-motivated,” have a “proven sales record” and the “ability to work quickly and think creatively.” They don’t actually say “out of the box” but I’ll bet that’s what they mean.
You’ll be selling to the gallery’s existing client base, but there’s only so much art existing customers will buy or can afford, so it’ll be on you to cultivate new customers.
Here’s a list of some of the Chelsea art galleries, in case you’re curious.
Here’s a little bit of history on Chelsea.
Also, there’s a Krispy Kreme at W. 23rd between 7th and 8th Avenue. I’ve eaten there and pronounce it a fine post-or-pre gallery treat.
Good luck, job seekers!
