Marvel Comics Review: Captain America: Reborn #1
Rating: *** 1/2 *
Captain America: Reborn is here! Ed Brubaker’s soon to be classic run on Captain America continues with this mini-series which will return Steve Rogers to land of the living, but did he ever really die in the first place?
In Captain America #600 we saw that Sharon Carter recovered the gun that she used to kill Steve. However, it appears that this is no ordinary gun and Steve Rogers was not killed, but instead he’s – somewhere else right now.
Ed Brubaker wastes no time in revealing what happened to Steve and how he will end up returning to the Marvel Universe.
It seems that the gun that Sharon used to “kill” Steve was part of a larger weapon that the Red Skull and Arnim Zola had borrowed from Dr. Doom. The weapon was a variation of Doom’s time platform. After the assassination, Sharon Cater was then strapped to the machine by Zola and the Skull to be used as a homing beacon of sorts in order to retrieve Steve’s body. Sharon was able to retrieve some of her senses and fought back which resulted in Steve becoming stuck in time and space. So where is he? He’s in the past.
The issue opens up with a group of U.S. soldiers on a landing craft on June 6, 1944 – D-Day. On one of the landing crafts is our guy Steve Rogers aka Captain America – looking a lot like his Ultimate Universe self than the traditional Cap we’ve seen for the past 65 years. I’m assuming this is a recon or maybe Steve is somehow stuck in the Ultimate Universe. Wouldn’t that be a twist!
Anyway, Steve is jumping from moment-to-moment in time from the beaches of Normandy to moment his mother died. Over in the present, Sharon Carter and the Falcon are informing Hank Pym and the Vision of what the situation is with Steve, the gun, and the time machine. The remnants of that machine are thought to be in the possession of Norman Osborn and HAMMER, so Bucky the current Captain America and the Black Widow, break into the HAMMER helicarrier only to find that it’s a trap and HAMMER agents along with Ares and Venom of the Dark Avengers are waiting for them.
In a nutshell, that’s about where we are right now. This is a very good start to this story, but as I said earlier, Ed Brubaker’s run on Captain America is a classic in the making. Great stuff here with some fantastic art by Bryan Hitch. Since Hitch was the artist on The Ultimates, I wonder if he took the liberty of making Cap look more like the Ultimate Cap. Very happy with this one and if you’ve haven’t been reading Cap for a while, you don’t need to know much else to jump in with this story. If you’ve haven’t been reading Cap since Brubaker came on, what the hells the matter with you?! See ya!
