You know who’s got a new project up on Kickstarter?
Mike Kunkel, the creator of Herobear whose work I also loved on DC Comics’ Billy Batson and The Magic Of Shazam!
Timmy And The Moonpiece is a little bit different - it’s not a comic book, it’s a 40-page children’s picture book. Here’s Mike, doing the explaining:

Quote Of The Day: Jim Starlin on The Avengers
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Movies, Marvel Comics,
"How weird is this? The Thanos Quest, a comic Ron Lim and I did more than two decades ago, is this past month's #1 best selling comic. All it takes is a little film exposure, apparently."

Weekend Reading: Stephen Bissette, Jack Kirby, Stephan Pastis & Stan Lee
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, DC Comics, Marvel Comics,
What ho, weekenders! And happy Canadian Thanksgiving to our hockeyless neighbors to the north!
Stephen Bissette’s Center For Cartoon Studies in White River Junction, VT has teamed up with the esteemed site Slate (via The Slate Book Review”) to launch the annual Cartoonist Studio Prize, with some real money attached for the winners. This looks like a heckuva good thing and thanks to all involved for putting it together.
Over the years, some of my favorite comics have disappeared from the newspaper as creators retired for various reasons. One of my favorites these days is Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis. Here’s Michael Cavna’s interview with him.

Welcome to Dave Sim City! It’s the game of the century! The 19th Century! Are you ready to play?
Dave Sim City is a close-minded, walled-off one-player environment that’s all the fun of the real experience but now in an incredible computer-based simulation! Design and build the Dave Sim City of your dreams. Create the rants, raves, and lengthy intellectual correspondence!
It’s all here just as you’ve experienced it in real life!
Once unleashed, the denizen of Dave Sim City takes on a life of its own! There’s no controlling it, you can only hope to contain it before he crosses the border or meets a woman.
Dave Sim City is a simulation of the popular comic book creator. In Dave Sim City he works, rants, writes screeds and melts down periodically requiring you to step back and turn off the game!

Quote Of The Day: Alex Pappademas on Stan Lee
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Marvel Comics,
"If Stan suing Marvel 10 years ago was like Colonel Sanders suing Kentucky Fried Chicken, confronting Stan in 2012 about the injustice done to Jack Kirby by Marvel would be like grilling Mr. Peanut about the business practices of Kraft Foods."
- Alex Pappademas, writing about "The Inquisition of Mr. Marvel: On The (Surprisingly Complicated) Legacy Of Stan Lee"

Grantland has put up a two-part excerpt from Sean Howe’s highly-anticipated new book: Marvel Comics: The Untold Story.
If you have any interest in Marvel Comics, especially its inner workings, then this appears to be must-reading. In the excerpt, here’s how various Marvel folks from the 1970s era are described:
Don McGregor: “... diminutive, fast-talking, aspiring filmmaker from Rhode Island.”
Steve Gerber: “...a chain-smoking Camus obsessive from St. Louis.”
Gerry Conway: “...the Brooklyn-born prodigy who'd started writing DC Comics when he was 16.”
Steve Englehart: “...a bearded and bespectacled conscientious objector from Indianapolis.”

MoCCA: How To Draw Comics The Jamal Igle Way!
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, DC Comics,
If you wanted to draw comics for a living (or just learn to draw better), you should try to find a comic art course with an excellent instructor to give you tips not just on drawing but on the business. Oh, wait, I found that for you.
The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA) at The Society of Illustrators in New York City has announced a new program, coordinated by my pal Danny Fingeroth. It’s called “Penciling for Comics, Intermediate Level” and the instructor is a great artist: Jamal Igle.

Disney has released a trailer for their new Lone Ranger movie, coming out in 2013. It’s directed by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean, Mousehunt), and written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (The Mask of Zorro) and Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road).
The Lone Ranger stars Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as his trusty companion.
After looking at the trailer, here are my thoughts:
10. Klinton Spilsbury is very happy now
9. Cowboy and Alien?

Thriller/horror novelist Tom Piccirilli recently underwent surgery for a brain tumor and he could use a helping hand to aid his recovery. I’m a big fan of Piccirilli’s books, and if you can spare a little bit from your wallet, his friend the novelist Brian Keene has some links.
Here’s a direct link with a rundown on a lot of Tom’s books. I wish Tom a speedy recovery and good thoughts go out to him and his family.

In case you've been wondering what Timothy Truman's been up to lately:
“Got a call from Grateful Dead Productions yesterday. They've asked to paint the covers for all 4 CDs of the 2013 run of the new 'Dave's Picks' series. Needless to say, I accepted! Will be doing 5 covers altogether -- 1 each quarter plus a cover for the bonus editions. Yep, purty cool gig! This week: cover for the last issue of Jeff Lamire's Vertigo comics series, Sweet Tooth & wrapping up the script for King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon issue 2. Next week: a cover for IDW's Judge Dredd & another for a special Joe Kubert Tribute issue of Comic Book Creator magazine.”
