Mackenzie Phillips Promoting Her Book One Interview at a Time

Not to downplay the seriousness of Mackenzie Phillips’ shocking claims against her famous father, but this former actress has launched what will surely be one of the most successful marketing plans for a tell-all book since…well, this doesn’t really compare to anything else. First, Phillips shared a shocker with Oprah. Now, she continues to tell her tale despite input from stepmom Michelle Phillips. By the time this book is on the shelves, there’s no doubt that Mackenzie will be at the top of the New York Times bestseller list.
Who says the print industry is struggling?
In the upcoming book, Mackenzie Phillips talks at great length about her incestuous relationship with her father, whom she says “wasn’t a monster.” According to his daughter, John Phillips “was a tortured man who led a tortured existence.”

“John was a bad parent, and a drug addict,” Michelle Phillips recently fired back in response to Mackenzie’s claims. “If she thinks it’s true, why isn’t she with a good psychiatrist on a couch? I think it’s unconscionable that Oprah would let her do her show. I have every reason to believe it’s untrue. Oprah should be more judicious about who she has on her show.”
Michelle continued, “Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She’s had a needle stuck up her arm for thirty-five years. She was arrested for heroin and coke just recently. She did Celebrity Rehab [with Dr. Drew] and now she writes a book. The whole thing is timed.”
That’s Hollywood, baby. However, it seems unlikely (at best) that Mackenzie would make such an earth-shattering accusation if there were not some truth to it, even for the sake of peddling a new tell-all book (which is called High on Arrival). John Phillips died of heart failure in 2001 and was the well-known leader of the popular 60s group The Mamas & The Papas. Mackenzie’s biggest claim to fame - until now - was her role on the sitcom One Day at a Time, in which Phillips often had to wear padding to cover her emaciated and drug-addicted frame.
