Are You In The DMOZ?
We all know that being listed in the major search engines is essential but getting listed in the DMOZ should also be high on your site promotion to-do list. The DMOZ, also known as the Open Source Directory Project (ODP), is a human edited directory of web sites which is freely available for anyone to download.
If you haven’t heard of DMOZ, it’s because few people use it directly. The vast majority of people who use the DMOZ directory do so via sites like Google and Yahoo. In fact, Googles entire directory of sites is the DMOZ directory. Not only is being listed in the DMOZ a way to increase the traffic to your site(s), it also provides a good link back with a high PR which will in turn increase the PR of your site(s).
How to submit your site:
1. Go to dmoz.org.
2. Search the directory to make sure your site isn’t already listed. Submitting a listed site could be seen as spamming.
3. Find the category that best describes your site, make sure you have the most detailed category. Once you have navigated to the correct category, click the “suggest URL” link at the top right of the page and fill out the form.
Some tips to get your site listed as fast as possible:
1. Make sure you submit your site to the proper category on the DMOZ site, otherwise, you’ll have to wait until it’s reviewed and put in the proper category queue where you’ll have to wait until it’s reviewed again.
2. Ensure that the title of your site matches the title you provide when submitting it to DMOZ. If the title and description you provide is far off from what is shown on the actual site your listing may be rejected without notice.
3. Submit your sites manually. Auto submissions from submission software/services are rejected.
4. Make sure that the site you are submitting has some unique content and value to a user. Sites made up of mostly affiliate links will not be accepted.
