Today I Die Again for iPhone available free today only

Posted by Drea Avellan Categories: Games, App Updates, iPad Apps, Sales, Free Apps,
In conjunction with Free App A Day (FAAD), Atakamalabs has released the popular IndieCade Jury Award winning title rewrite, Today I Die Again by Daniel Benmergui, completely free. Today I Die Again is a thought provoking adventure using words as means to action.
The scene opens underwater with the body of a dead woman floating lifeless in the dark. The rock tied around her waist suggests that her demise was no accident. A poem floats above her: “hopeless world / full of shadows / today I die”
Players must use the floating glowing words or reveal hidden ones to help you transform the ever-present poem in order to progress through the game. All along the way you battle the dark creatures from the depths in effort to break through to the surface. The oddly creative music score sets the mood perfectly as you are immersed deeper into this pixelated world. Today I Die Again is truly a unique game unlike any other, exploring new ways to express emotions through a video game experience.
Today I Die Again is available free on the iTunes store for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Last month a little gem popped unnoticed on the App Store named Cover Orange. Following a recent promotion giving away the game for free, it has now reached the top 10 list on iTunes. The premise is for you to move from level to level, protecting oranges from acid rain. The first thing you notice is how similar this one is to Angry Birds, from the way the levels are made, to the physics properties that the gameplay relies on. In this case, instead of throwing birds offensively, you have to protect your oranges from the nasty clouds and their acid rain.
Both the graphics and sounds are amazing, with the oranges themselves thanking you for saving them. The animations are excellent, with everything flowing nicely from one sequence to the next. Solving physics puzzles is the meat of the game, and you get access to various objects to try and cover your oranges with, like barrels and wheels, by interacting with the other items on the level. High scores are linked to the Game Center, but it's just a lot of fun solving each level. The controls are extremely simple, you simply grab objects and let them drop where you want, and watch how they interact with the level.
The game costs $0.99 and is available for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It comes with 120 levels, 40 of them being new as of the latest update. The video trailer shows the game well, and at this price, it really is a must have.

LOLCats Cheezburger Network picks up $30 million in funding

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Blogging, Corporate News, Funding, Startups,
Venture capital firms have thrown $30 million behind one of life's simplest pleasures: looking at funny pictures of cats and writing hilarious captions to go with them.
The Cheezburger Network, the company that owns the humor and feel-good site I Can Has Cheezburger?, just got a whopper influx of cash, which it says will be used to update existing sites and tools, expand its staff, and perhaps acquire new Web sites.
The investments are led by Foundry Group, Avalon Ventures, Madrona Venture Group, and SoftBank Capital. Brad Feld of Foundry, Greg Gottesman of Madrona, and Rich Levandov of Avalon will join the Cheezburger board.
The funding means "that we are going to be able to provide you with even more content and an even better user experience," Jen Nausin, marketing director for the Cheezburger Network, said in a blog post. "As it relates to specific features, this might sound crazy, but honestly, we're not sure what's coming yet. We're a company that's about testing ideas and understanding what our users want from us so keep your feedback coming!"

Sprint to hike rates on smartphone data plans by $10

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Corporate News,
If you're planning to get a new smartphone on Sprint, you should probably do so in the next couple of weeks. After Jan. 30, data plans for smartphones activated on the carrier will go up in price by $10 a month, the company announced today.
Called "Premium Data," the mandatory charge is added to the Sprint's existing unlimited $70 Everything Data plan, pumping it up to $80 a month. Sprint says the increase is to address its users' "growing appetite for a richer mobile experience." The charge affects only smartphones activated Jan. 30 or later—existing customers will not experience the increase until they upgrade.

Facebook allows apps to access addresses and phone numbers [Update: Feature suspended]

Posted by Patrick Lambert Categories: Corporate News, Social Networks,
Update: Due to user backlash, Facebook has suspended this feature for now. One reason is that, while it is opt-in to give this information to an app, you have to make that decision before you get to actually see what the app does, during the install process.
This weekend, Facebook updated its developer blog with some new abilities for developers of Facebook apps. The biggest change is the ability from those apps to now access user contact information like home addresses and phone numbers. This data used to be kept confidential from apps, but now they will be able to access it if a user grants that permission. There are some obvious uses for that, such as a shopping app which fetches your address for shipping purposes. Apps will have to explicitly ask for user permission, which will appear as a new entry on the Request for Permission screen, and they will be expected to follow Facebook's rules of conduct. The safest course of action, of course, is to not add your contact information to Facebook in the first place.

Green Hornet's Opening Weekend: $40 Million
Following the $40 million debut of Green Hornet, we at Comix 411 have been fortunate to obtain this recently-leaked memo from [name redacted], a movie executive eager to launch big budget action movies from known properties.
"Thor? Green Lantern? That's yesterday's news! I don't want my tentpole films based on comic books and those graphic novel thingies any more.
"This weekend, the audience for Green Hornet spoke clearly with their wallets about what they really want. And it's movies based on old time radio!
"Apparently there's a goldmine of this radio stuff just waiting for a reboot. My assistant's intern – with the help of his great grandfather and his caregiver - put together a list of potential radio show franchises.

Publisher's Weekly is reporting on a potential change in pawn shop legislation in Utah that's going to affect used bookstores. It's called the Pawnshop and Secondhand Merchandise Transmission Information Act.
The law – "requiring them (pawn shops) to very actively – and expensively – register all their transactions with a central state database" - used to exempt used bookstores, but that could be changing unless people get on the ball and join the fight against it.
