On Gear Live: Samsung S95C: The OLED TV You Can’t Afford (to Ignore!)

Rosie O’Donnell has avoided comment on the drama-filled departure of Star Jones from The View. She did coyly reply that her opinion of Star was well-known.

ABC has temporarily replaced Jones with actress Renee Elise Goldsberry, from One Life to Live. O’Donnell joins the morning talk show this fall.

The real question, however, is if Rosie, like Ellen, will suddenly remove all traces of lesbianism from her life once she is on daytime TV.

Harrison Ford and Calista FlockhartHarrison Ford has finally agreed to marry Calista Flockhart (of Ally McBeal fame).  After dating for four years, the couple are likely to exchange vows later this year.

Sources say that Flockhart, who has never been married, had to do a lot of convincing to get Harrison to agree. Having divorced his wife of 20 years - Melissa Mathison - in 1984, Ford was hesitant to jump back into marriage again.

Flockhart, 41, is also anxious to have a baby with Ford, who is 22 years her senior. The actress wants a sibling for her adopted four-year-old son, Liam. Apparently Ford has agreed to adopt a baby with Flockhart - which comes as a relief to most of us, because no one wants to see that couple breed!

BigBrother7As if the three-times-per-week broadcasts were not enough, Big Brother 7: All-Stars will be available in a variety of ways:

  • As in the past, RealNetworks will stream live video coverage, available 24/7 for $14.99 per month or $39.99 for all three months. I can’t imagine why people would want to see 24/7 coverage when it’s on TV so darn much, but there must be enough of a demand for them to continue to offer it.
  • CBS.com’s broadband channel, InnerTube, will air episodes (for free) in their entirety the day after the episode airs on TV. Episodes will be archived so you can easily catch up if you have a life and can’t commit to three nights per week.
  • CBS.com will continue to run the “House Calls” daily talk show, plus each Head of Household will maintain a blog during the season.
  • For the diehard fans, you can purchase a “Big Brother Mobile Pack” for your cell phone – including photos, video clips, contestant diaries, “live breaking house alerts” and summaries.

So, now that you’ve got all that, here’s the episode schedule:

  • Premieres Thursday, July 6th
  • Tuesdays at 8PM ET
  • Thursdays at 8PM ET
  • Sundays at 8 PM ET

America's Got Talent I finally got around to checking out America’s Got Talent. I was able to catch a repeat of Episode 2 - which originally aired this Wednesday on NBC - on Bravo and boy was I surprised! America really has got talent - or at least, it sort of does. This show is a bizarre American Idol rip-off (I mean “spin-off”, Simon Cowell is the producer) that follows the the Idol formula a little too closely.

Talent, like Idol, has three celebrity judges: the sympathetic singing star (Brandy), the caustic British Judge (Piers Morgan), and the random pop culture icon (David Hasselhoff!) It is a formula that works, but unfortunately most of the critiques end up sounding scripted. The majority of the decisions seem to ultimately come down to the Hoff as a tie-breaker, for Brandy is too nice to say no to anyone (except maybe the woman who performed a sexy strip tease on stage) and Piers is too mean to say yes to anyone.

Oh and wait! It’s got Regis too, but I guess anyone is better than Seacrest at this point.

The real difference between Idol and Talent, is that while America may never tire of new emerging pop stars, there isn’t much need for a new hit harp player, baton twirler, or um, “stove-on-chin-balancer”. The show is entertaining and the performers - most of them - are indeed quite skilled, but is there really any market for these contestants after the show is over? When it all comes down to it, Idol‘s got marketable talent but Talent has not.

I must say, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen a man balance swords in his mouth while dressed in an Victoria’s Secret-esque angel outfit and high heels. The amazing Leonid’s plea to return to the next round (after being eliminated) was a heart-wrenching site to behold. Apparently it worked because even Piers reversed his vote. I guess he knows good TV when he sees it and the freak show acts on this show are definitely good TV.

David Boreanaz in BonesThe “median age” of a show is the age at which an equal amount of its viewers are above and below that age. For instance,  The West Wing’s median age is 54 (meaning that half of the show’s viewers are younger than 54 and half are older than 54). E-Ring, the new West Wing spin-off based in the Pentagon, also has a median age of 54.

Many of today’s new shows have relatively high median ages; something that might cause concern in an industry that tends to cater to a younger demographic. It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that last season’s Commander in Chief had a median age of 55 years, while CBS’s NCIS has a median age of 56. Cold Case also had a median age of 56.

What was unpredictable was the median age of Fox’s Bones: 44. Any show starring heartthrob David Boreanaz (of Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame) certainly expected a younger audience than that! 24 also had a relatively high median age at 45 years, which is interesting considering Fox’s youth-centric reputation.

On the other hand, The Simpsons – which has been on the air for a whopping seventeen seasons – has the same low median age of 29 that it had several years ago.  Despite being an “old” show, it hasn’t had any trouble engaging younger viewers.

NBC_logo After a rocky start, NBC and YouTube have reached a mutual agreement that allows YouTube to post NBC clips of the new fall season. Things were not always so agreeable, as NBC made YouTube pull the Saturday Night Live “Lazy Sunday” Digital Short earlier this year.

NBC’s 2006-2007 lineup will be featured on a dedicated YouTube channel that houses NBC’s clips. NBC is also asking YouTube visitors to create their own 20-second promo video for The Office – the winning promo will air on NBC in August.

John Miller, NBC Universal Television’s marketing chief, says “YouTube is the perfect online media partner to promote NBC’s marquee entertainment to their audience and explore new and creative ways to harness the power of viral video in a manner that respects copyrights.” A smart move, considering YouTube’s popularity – as many as 70 million videos are viewed daily.

BladeIt’s true that taking a famous movie and turning it into a TV show can be a big risk. However, people always say that the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward and this has sometimes proven true when it comes to that difficult big-screen-to-small-screen transition.

One of the newest attempts is Spike’s Blade, based on the vampire trilogy starring Wesley Snipes. This series stands to be an even bigger risk, as it is Spike TV’s first original scripted dramatic series.

One risk - coincidentally, also vampire-themed - that did pay off was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Based on a cheesy, B-movie about an airhead cheerleader turned “chosen one”, that series may have been one of the biggest risks in TV history. The original film starred Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry for goodness sake! It ended up being a risk worth taking. Buffy, which aired for seven years, earned creator Joss Whedon Emmy nominations, a spin-off (Angel) and a cult following.

The Odd Couple was both a successful film and a long-running sitcom, as was M*A*S*H which stayed on the air from 1972 to 1983!

One risk that did not pay off was the short-lived and long-forgotten Ferris Bueller series, based on the movie starring Matthew Broderick. The film was a huge hit and is a still popular today, but the show tanked. Clueless - which actually featured many of the original cast members from the movie version, minus star Alicia Silverstone - was also cancelled early on.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a surprise hit in theaters; My Big Fat Greek Life was a surprise flop on television despite holding on to the original star (and creator) Nia Vardalos.

We’ll have to wait and see if Blade will kill or be killed. Wesley Snipes leaves some pretty big shoes to fill. One can only hope that Kirk “Sticky” Jones, who plays the title role in the series, is up to the task.

Britney SpearsBritney Spears has surprised everyone by appearing nude on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar (in a style similar to Demi Moore’s famous Vanity Fair cover). The fact that she has decided to bare it all was not the surprise. Truthfully, she’s revealed about as much before, thanks to the semi-risque outfits of her past concerts and music videos.

The real shocker was that she actually looked good!

With dark hair and subtle makeup, she looks like an entirely new person. The Harper’s cover shows Britney in a completely different way than we’ve come to think of her lately. Instead of a young, white trash, basketcase… Brit looks sophisticated and beautiful. One might even say she’s “glowing”.

After all she’s been through lately - doubts about her parenting skills, marital problems with husband Kevin Federline, a decrease in income, endless rumors - even Britney’s critics will be refreshed to see how relaxed and happy she seems in the cover photo.

If only she’d considered this look for her Dateline interview.

The View castEarlier reports that Star Jones Reynolds quit The View have now been revealed to be untrue.  According to a report on People‘s website, Jones Reynolds claims she was asked not to return to her next day of work on the popular talk show, and ABC confirms this report.  Apparently, the final split was the product of a period of hostility between Jones Reynolds and the show.  “What you don’t know is that my contract was not renewed for the tenth season,” she states. “I feel like I was fired.”  She tells People that she got the news about her contract right after the show announced that Rosie O’Donnell, who openly dislikes Jones Reynolds, would be joining the show.  I’m no fan of Star’s, but that’s a pretty shabby way to treat someone whose been with your show from the beginning, even if she is pretty obnoxious.  Jones Reynolds made the announcement on the show on Tuesday, which was two days earlier than planned, by breaking into a segment on air conditioning.

rockstar_supernovaRock Star: Supernova starts next week, Wednesday, July 5th at 8PM ET/PT. The 90-minute premiere will introduce viewers to the new band called Supernova, featuring Tommy Lee from Motley Crue, a former Metallica guitarist and former Guns N’Roses guitarist. Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke return for a second go-around of the reality talent show that pits fifteen singers against each other for the coveted lead singer slot. If this is as good as last year’s season, it’s sure to be much cooler than America’s Got Talent. I jumped on the bandwagon a bit late for the INXS run, but it was refreshing to see talented people that weren’t trying to fit the pop mold of American Idol.

The second episode will air on Thursday, July 6th, following the Big Brother 7: All-Stars premiere, so get comfy on that couch – it’s a big night o’ reality TV! (To further complicate things, Rock Star will then air Tuesdays at 9PM and Wednesdays at 8PM.)
