Coming Soon to Amazon: TV and Movie Downloads

Amazon.com is jumping on the bandwagon. Where once they considered getting into the downloadable music scene, Amazon wised up and saw that iTunes held the lion’s share of that market. With Amazon Digital Video, however, they have more of a playing field to conquer, offering full-length movies and TV shows for download. According to AdAge, the service will be launched next month, with subscription or pay-per-view options. The details about the cost of a subscription or per download have yet to be disclosed. Similarly, the variety of downloads that will be offered for download are not yet known.

Hunky New Cast Member Joins Lost

Rodrigo Santoro, seen opposite Laura Linney in Love, Actually and Demi Moore in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, will be joining the cast of Lost. Of course, as with all things related to Lost, there are no details about whether he will be one of The Others, part of a flashback, or a new character to be featured on life off of the island. According to show producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, “We don’t really want to be at all specific about what we’re doing with the character or what he’s going to play. Part of the surprise and the enjoyment of watching the show is sort of getting a chance to meet a new character and see how his role is going to unfold in relation to the rest of the cast.” One thing is for sure –- another shirtless hunk in the cast can’t hurt.
In other Lost news, the online interactive game—The Lost Experience—will reveal the importance of Hurley’s lottery numbers that pop up in every episode. Those online gamers who get through the third phase of the game will reveal the mystery of the numbers.

Singing…With the Stars

People just love to see celebrities boxing, dancing, ice skating…and now, singing. Fox TV has announced the professional songbirds that will be paired with celebrities on the new show Celebrity Duets. The big names include: Chaka Khan, Clint Black, Michael Bolton, Cyndi Lauper, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Brian McKnight, Macy Gray, Patti LaBelle, Kenny Loggins, Richard Marx, Randy Travis, and Aaron Neville. The series premieres with a two-hour show on August 29th, and will follow the model of American Idol, allowing judges and viewers to cast their votes for elimination. The b-list
celebrities have not yet been announced, but composer David Foster will be one of the judges. Well, it seems to have a bit more potential than the celebrity skating debacle. I mean, Kenny Loggins and Richard Marx? Gold, baby.

Lost Diaries, Upcoming Season Info

At Comic-Con on Saturday, 4,000 Lost fans got a sneak peek at The Lost Diaries, a series of mobile phone episodes for diehard Losties. The “mobisodes” are a result of Hurley finding a video camera on the island and filming his experience. Lost creators hope to film 13 two-minute mobisodes on Verizon this fall, but according to executive producer Damon Lindelof, “It has been hard to get it off the ground, because we don’t want them to be ... lame.”
Season 3, premiering on October 4th, will certainly not disappoint. As mentioned in a previoius post on TV Envy, the series will be split into two chunks to eliminate reruns. Executive producer Carlton Cuse teased that the episodes “will look a little like a miniseries,” with Lindelof adding, “Something happens midway through the year that will fry everybody’s brain.” Other juicy tidbits:
- J.J. Abrams will co-write the premiere, titled “A Tale of Two Cities,” and may direct the first episode following the break.
- Kate (Evangeline Lilly) is promised to have a romantic involvement within the first six episodes.
- Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick), the man in the hatch, will be back (that was a big unanswered question from the season ending).
- The show will include more information about The Others’ history and identities (and certainly will introduce new questions).
- The writers will focus more on the characters off of the island. Cuse promises, “We’re laying the seeds for a whole new element.”

Last Comic, America’s Got Talent Renewed

NBC announced that it has ordered additional seasons of Last Comic Standing and America’s Got Talent, set to air in 2007. Last Comic will return next summer, while the second season of Talent promises a January midseason premiere, following the end of the NFL season. Says NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly, “Both of these series have been bright spots on the summer television landscape. We think they’ll be around for a long time.” Talent has definitely improved NBC’s summer ratings, ranking as the most watched original show of the season. The episodes average about 11.7 million viewers a week. Next month, the million-dollar winner will be announced. Similarly, NBC has seen good ratings for Last Comic, drawing about 8.2 million viewers per week. Personally, I tuned out pretty early on with both of these shows, but hey, somebody’s watching!

Tina Fey Resigns From SNL

The rumors have come to fruition. Tina Fey is leaving Saturday Night Live to pursue her new gig on the NBC series 30 Rock, which premieres on October 11th. Fey has been with SNL since 1997, starting as a writer and becoming the first female head writer in 1999. Her role as co-anchor for the “Weekend Update” segment of the show began in 2000. During Fey’s appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Friday, she said, “The new show’s going to take a lot of time. I wanted to stop doing Saturday Night Live so I could spend more time with Star Jones.”
The plot of 30 Rock in many ways mirrors her role on SNL—she’ll play the head writer of a fictional late-night sketch show. So, not much of a stretch, I suppose… but she has a lot of great experience to work with. Fey told Leno, “This is the big leap I’m making, it’s a show about working at a late-night comedy show… I’m very creative.”
According to Lorne Michaels, executive producer of 30 Rock and SNL, they will test various individuals and duos in September to find a replacment for Fey on “Weekend Update.” “If you’re asking if I’m happy about it, no,” said Michaels. “Tina disappearing is a huge hole in the writing staff.”

Nobody’s Watching Gets a Second Chance

I love it. A failed sitcom pilot has been given a new life on the Internet. Nobody’s Watching, a sitcom that was previously passed on by both NBC and the WB was posted on YouTube in June. The show ended up getting a lot of attention and before you know it, hundreds of thousands of people were stopping by to check the pilot out. The show was created by Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and two Family Guy writers, so there is an impressive comedic pedigree. Says NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly, “I love the spirit of the experimentation and I think if we can actually have something find an audience on the web, gravitate over to the network, continue with a web presence and have them feed each other, that could end up being a really cool thing.” To test the waters, Nobody’s Watching will continue online in a series of webisodes before airing on NBC. Look for the webisodes within the next month. At present, there is no guarantee that the pilot will ever make it to the small screen, but its online popularity could certainly improve its chances.

Madonna Concert to air on NBC in November

Hoping to increase ratings, NBC is planning to air a two-hour Madonna concert in November. Madonna: The Confessions Tour Live will be taped in London’s Wembley Stadium this summer. Since Madonna shows are anything but squeaky clean, NBC is expected to tape the concert and edit the show for broadcast. Kevin Reilly, president of NBC Entertainment said, “She is going to do her show, and we will decide which numbers are in the (TV special) and which are not, and that is whole numbers. We are not going to make piecemeal edits.” NBC is currently ranked in fourth place among the four major U.S. broadcast networks, so the Madonna special could certainly bring in the numbers.

Kim Cattrall’s Sexy Car Ad Pulled in New Zealand

Kim Cattrall oozed sex appeal as Samantha on Sex in the City, but apparently that sexiness doesn’t translate as well in New Zealand, where a Nissan ad filled with double entendres was pulled due to viewer complaints. The ad for the new Nissan Tiida features Cattrall as the same type of Samantha character from the HBO series. She oohs and ahhs while driving the car, saying such things as “More…more…more” and “Why didn’t you tell me it was so big? I just wasn’t prepared for it.” The spot has a voiceover that says “The all-new Nissan Tiida makes you feel really, really, really good inside.” The New Zealand Television Commercial Approvals Bureau did approve it, but Nissan decided to pull the ad when so many complaints were received. Says a company spokesperson, “We made this decision in the interest of self-regulation and in response to public feedback.” Interestingly enough, the same ad has been airing in Australia since February without incident.
