One week after facing a new Private Practice, Southland was put to another test. A repeat of Criminal Minds not only did better than the now-moved Harper’s Island, it attracted the most viewers in the 10:00 hour.
8pm
- Survivor: Tocantins (11.7 million, 3.6/11 in 18-49) improved by 300,000.
- Bones (8.8 million, 2.2/7) saw an increase of 600,000.
- Ugly Betty (6.8 million, 2.0/6) was off 10% from its the last original.
- My Name is Earl (2.2/7) and Parks and Recreation (2.3/7) both pulled in 5.3 million.
- Smallville (3.3 million, 1.4/4) rounded up another 200,000.

Thursday Ratings: ABC, CBS Split Sweeps Start

After what seemed like months of repeats, ABC returned last night with (mostly) new episodes. The network took the 10:00 hour away from Southland and won the night’s demos. CBS, though, was first place with the viewers.
8pm
- Survivor: Tocantins (11.4 million, 3.5/11 in 18-49) was on par with last week.
- Bones (8.2 million, 2.2/7) dropped 500,000.
- My Name is Earl (5.5 million, 2.2/7) picked up 200,000; Parks and Recreation (5.2 million, 2.3/7) lost 700,000.
- Grey’s Anatomy* (5.1 million, 1.5/5) did better than the previous comedies.
- Smallville* (1.3/4) returned to 3.1 million.

Thursday Ratings: Parks Weakens Without Office
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, Grey’s Anatomy, My Name Is Earl, Survivor, The Office, Ratings,
Although it’s still hard to say how Southland will do against an ABC original, the series held up remarkably well in its second week. Unfortunately, the same can’t entirely be said for Harper’s or Parks. The CBS mystery lost nearly 2 million in its second week while the comedy suffered a case of the post-Earl blues.
8pm
- Survivor: Tocantins (11.6 million, 3.5/11 in 18-49) added on 300,000.
- Bones (8.7 million, 2.5/8) slipped by 200,000.
- My Name is Earl (5.3 million, 2.1/7) did 1.9 million less than last week’s Office; Parks and Recreation (5.9 million, 2.5/7) fell by 900,000 after smaller lead-in.
- In the Motherhood (4.7 million, 1.4/5) and Samantha Who? (5 million, 1.5/5) were both up 100,000.
- Smallville* (1.8 million, 0.8/2) was off by 200,000.

MONDAY 4/13)
- Chuck (NBC, 8pm): “When Chuck’s father is abducted by Fulcrum forces, Chuck attempts to rescue him by putting his faith in a most unlikely person—his double-crossing ex-girlfriend, Jill (Jordana Brewster).” Well, she is fast and furious.
- Dhani Tackles the Globe (Travel, 9pm): “Dhani visits Spain’s Basque region to learn about jai alai, a fast-paced ball game that’s been called “ballet with bullets.” That’s one performance of The Nutcracker I would probably sit out.
- Roommates (ABC Family, 9pm): “Hope’s father makes a surprise visit and tells her to come home because he’s unhappy with her job situation.” Doesn’t he, like, understand how hard it is out there? He’s so lame.
- 24 (FOX, 9pm): “Jack’s daughter returns.” Because the worst day in Daddy’s life just wouldn’t be the same without her.

Thursday Ratings: CBS and NBC Tie Post-Premieres
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, Grey’s Anatomy, Survivor, The Office, Ratings,
Depending on how you spin the numbers, the evening either belonged to NBC, CBS or both. The premiere of Southland won the 10:00 battle against Harper’s Island in the demos, but lost in the viewers. NBC tied CBS in the demos, but the Eye network won overall with the viewers. (Maybe we’ll just have to recalculate when ABC isn’t in repeats.)
8pm
- Survivor: Tocantins (11.3 million, 3.5/11 in 18-49) was up 100,000.
- Bones (8.9 million, 2.5/8) was down 100,000.
- A special episode of The Office (3.3/11) attracted 7.2 million; Parks and Recreation (3.0/9) debuted to 6.8 million.
- In the Motherhood (4.6 million, 1.3/4) lost 400,000; Samantha Who? (4.9 million, 1.4/4) did about the same.
- Smallville* (2 million, 0.7/2) fell by 1.8 million.

MONDAY 4/6)
- Little People, Big World (TLC, 8pm): “Molly gets her learner’s permit, but her driving lessons get off to a shaky start.” Hours of Mario Kart Wii clearly hasn’t helped.
- Chuck (NBC, 8pm): “Chuck’s lfe takes fortunate turns: Not only does his long-estranged father return, but Chuck scores a coveted job with Ted Roark (Chevy Chase), a heroic figure in his life.” The guy who got Christie Brinkley to jump naked into a pool is a hero to many.
- Surviving Suburbia (ABC, 9:30pm): “Cynical dad (Bob Saget) accidentally starts a fire in his neighbor’s home after he reluctantly agrees to house-sit.” That’s one way to make sure he won’t be asked again.
- Mystery Diagnosis (Discovery Health, 10pm): “A newlywed suffers from crippling nausea.” Cold feet is what happens before the wedding.

Casting Corner: The Closer, Lie to Me, Burn Notice and More
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Cable, CBS, FX, FOX, NBC, The CW, TNT-HD, The Office,
Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:
The Closer: Mary McDonnell has just lined up her next basic cable job. The Battlestar Galactica vet just has been cast as Christina Hatcher, head of the Force Investigation Division. Unfortunately for Brenda, this captain won’t exactly be a member of her fan club. McDonnell is slated to appear in several Season 5 episodes.

Thursday Ratings: Samantha No Better Than Betty
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Music, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, American Idol, ER, Grey’s Anatomy, My Name Is Earl, The Office, Ratings,
If ABC was hoping to make some improvements to its Thursday night ratings, the network might have to try again. In the Motherhood and Samantha Who? tied Ugly Betty‘s previous demos while averaging a smaller audience. Meanwhile, a rare Thursday appearance of American Idol gave FOX a win in both categories.
8pm
- American Idol (7.4/21 in 18-49) rang up 22.4 million.
- NCAA basketball (10.1 million, 3.5/9) rallied 700,000 more.
- The premiere of In the Motherhood (6.7 million, 2.1/6) tied Samantha Who? (6.5 million, 2.1/6) in the demos.
- My Name is Earl (5.9 million, 2.0/6) fell by 500,000; an early episode of The Office* (4.8 million, 2.1/5) was up 200,000.
- Smallville (3.7 million, 1.5/4) added on 400,000.

MONDAY (3/23)
- The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm): “Amy gives birth to her son and has a difficult time adjusting to life as a mom.” Unfortunately for her, society is no longer interested in single mothers of one child.
- Gossip Girl (CW, 8pm): “Lily and Rufus make lists of their past lovers.” I think even Gossip Girl would qualify that as TMI.
- Animal Cops: Phoenix (Animal, 10pm): “A skunk gets trapped in an elevator shaft.” Well that stinks.
- Table for 12 (TLC, 10pm): Series premiere. “Betty Hayes, mother of three sets of multiples (twins, twins, sextuplets), is sent to the spa on her birthday, while the rest of the family plans a special celebration at home.” Great. More stuff for her to clean up later.

Thursday Ratings: Wins for Both CBS, ABC
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, Sports, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, ER, Grey’s Anatomy, My Name Is Earl, The Office, Ratings,
College sports coverage proved to be both a winner and loser for CBS last night. Although the NCAA tournament didn’t earn the network another double win last night, the court action did score a tie in the demos with ABC. (The Alphabet was the sole winner with the viewers.)
8pm
- Bones (10.2 million, 3.0/9 in 18-49) raised 600,000.
- CBS’ NCAA basketball coverage (3.5/10) scored 9.4 million.
- Ugly Betty (7.6 million, 2.1/6) picked up 400,000.
- My Name is Earl (6.4 million, 2.4/8) improved by 2 million; a repeat of The Office (4.6 million, 2.0/6) did better than the Kath finale.
- Smallville (3.3 million. 1.4/4) lost 400,000.
