Finally a bit of good news for NBC. Even though the network faced another evening against American Idol, it did manage a second-place finish in the demos. Why? Nice returns for both The Biggest Loser and SVU. (The repeats on CBS also helped.)

Last night’s premiere of Reaper never really stood a chance. Although it was originally scheduled for a 9:00 debut, CW pitted the show against both American Idol and The Biggest Loser. (Had NCIS been new, the bleeding could have been worse.)

- NCIS* (2.6/7) dialed up 13.7 million.
- The Biggest Loser: Couples (3.5/9) averaged 9 million over two hours.

Last night’s two-hour episode of American Idol faced direct competition with CBS’ powerhouse. Although Idol was the night’s top draw, the program saw a drop from last year’s outing. The Mentalist also took a numbers hit, though the blow could have been worse.

- NCIS (18.1 million, 3.7/10) remained even.

- Homeland Security USA (1.4/4) rounded up 4.7 million.
- 90210* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) gave up 1.3 million.

All of a sudden, FOX is being forced to work hard for its money. Last night, new episodes of NCIS and The Mentalist put CBS within 100,000 viewers of the American Idol network. Meanwhile, an Octo-mom special had NBC tied with CBS for second place in the demos.

Tuesday Ratings: Biggest Loser Grows Despite Idol

I was always lead to believe that shows airing at the same time as Idol would suffer because of it. Apparently that isn’t the case with The Biggest Loser. Last night, the NBC show actually improved in the face of Simon Cowell.
8pm
- American Idol (25.2 million, 9.6/24 in 18-49) picked up 2.8 million in the post-inauguration week.
- NCIS (19 million, 3.9/10) was up 7.3 million over last week’s repeat.
- The Biggest Loser: Couples (11 million, 4.1/10) beefed up by 8%.
- Homeland Security USA (1.6/4) settled for 5.6 million.
- 90210* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) lost 1.3 million.

Tuesday Ratings: Idol Down, Fringe Up
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Music, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, Specials, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, American Idol, Ratings,
There’s only one man in our country who could make American Idol fall 25% in one week: Barack Obama. It’s assumed that coverage of the presidential inauguration is responsible for the program’s Week 2 decline. (If it isn’t, the show could be in serious trouble.) Meanwhile, Fringe still managed to benefit from AI’s lower numbers. The freshman series saw its second-largest audience to date.
8pm
- American Idol (22.4 million, 8.9/22 in 18-49) plunged 7.7 million.
- ABC’s Neighborhood Ball: An Inauguration Celebration (3.7/9) attracted 12.6 million.
- NCIS* (11.7 million, 2.3/6) was down 6.9 million.
- The Biggest Loser: Couples (10.2 million, 3.9/9) piled on 1.3 million more.
- 90210 (2.4 million, 1.1/4) improved by 200,000.

Last night’s Steelers/Ravens playoff game was by far the evening’s biggest draw. The competition on the gridiron - coupled with a special episode of The Mentalist - gave CBS easy wins in both categories.

- Approximately 40.6 million watched Pittsburgh beat Baltimore on CBS.
- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (8.6 million, 2.9/7 in 18-49) was down 1.7 million.
- Dateline (1.1/3) pulled in 5.8 million.
- A block of The Simpsons* (2.0/4) averaged 4.35 million.
- CW‘s broadcast of Mr. Mom (0.4/1) entertained 1.2 million.

Tuesday Ratings: Good and Bad News for American Idol
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Music, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, American Idol, Scrubs, Ratings,
The addition of a 4th judge didn’t help American Idol‘s ratings last night. The series saw its lowest demo number for a premiere; it also had its smallest audience for an opener since 2004. But bad news is always relative. The show was still the hottest ticket so far this year. CBS’ programs, in the meantime, displayed remarkable strength despite increased competition.
8pm
- Approximately 30.1 million (11.7/28 in 18-49) saw American Idol‘s Phoenix auditions.
- NCIS (18.6 million, 3.7/9) only lost 500,000.
- The Biggest Loser: Couples (8.9 million, 3.3/8) gave up 2.9 million.
- Homeland Security USA (6 million, 1.8/5) let 1.8 million go.
- 90210 (2.2 million, 1.1/3) slid by 21%.
